Cottoncandycoasters

Pattern by Yvonne van Zijl @bokkyshome

US-terms

These coasters are the result of a failed design that I was making. It was laying on the table and I thought it
actually looked pretty as a coaster. They measure 10 cm.

Skill level
Beginner friendly

Materials

Yarn and Colors Must Have : about 10 g per color
cream, vanilla, cotton candy, blossom and opaline glass

This is a super project to use up all your scraps of yarn.

Use any color variation and any yarn that you like. Use a size hook that is appropriate for the yarn that you
choose. The size of the coasters will be different when using a bigger or smaller hook. You could skip (or add) a
round (or 2) to end up with the same size coasters.

1 pair of scissors
1 darning needle
1 crochet hook 3,5 mm
Used abbreviations

MR – magic ring
St - stitch
Slst– slipstitch
Ch – chain
Sc – single crochet
SP– Spike stitch : to make the spike stitch, insert the hook at the base of the stitch and not under the top loops.
Crochet a sc, it will be slightly longer than your usual sc. Do not pull tight.
BL – Back Loop
INC – increase : 2 sc in the same st.
[-] – repeat these instructions the mentioned amount of times
(-) – stitch count per round

Important

The coasters are crocheted in the round.

In each round with SP, there will be an increase of stitches ( except in the border of the holder).

So in the rounds with SP you do NOT skip any stitches.

Pay attention that you crochet a sc in the st hiding behind the SP.

The SP is crocheted straight below the last sc that you crocheted, into the base of the same st as that last sc
was made in.

When you crochet the SP below the next st, it will not look as straight.

New color yarn in UNEVEN rounds, is attached with a slst, ch 1 and sc in the same st. If you like you can start
with a standing sc instead. It will be less easy to crochet over the starting yarn end though.

Do crochet 2 rounds in the same color each time to make the SP show more.

Crochet the first stitches of a round over the starting yarn end. That will save you a lot of work.

The ch 1 at the beginning of the EVEN numbered rounds, are turned into a sc with the invisible finish at the end
of the round. The ch 1 in the EVEN rounds is counted as a stitch.

The invisible finish is as follows:

The round started with ch 1. Cut the yarn at the end of the round and pull it through the loop that is still on
your hook. With a darning needle, insert the yarn from front to back through the top of the 1st sc after the
starting ch 1. Then insert the needle from top to bottom through the last stitch AND through the beginning ch
1. Do not pull closed too tight. The ch 1 will now look like a regular sc. Work away the yarn end.

The coaster-holder

Repeat rounds 1 through 12

I forgot to take pictures from here on, but I think that if you got this far, you can handle these next rounds
easily. There are no more increases in the next rounds , so no difficult sc behind the SP. You can just skip the st
behind the SP.

Round 13: change color.
There are no increases in this round. Skip the st behind the SP.
Crochet the sc in BLO.
Start above any SP of round 11.
Attach yarn with a slst (in BLO), ch 1, sc in the same st, [sc in the next st] x 2, [SP, 5 sc] x 11, SP, 2 sc, slst in the
1st sc.
(2 slst, 1 ch, 12 SP, 60 sc)

Round 14: use the same color as in round 13.
ch 1, [1 sc in the next st] x 71, cut yarn and make an invisible finish over the starting ch 1.
(72 sc)

Round 15: change color.
Start above any SP of the previous color.
There are no increases in this round. Skip the st behind the SP.
Attach yarn with a slst, ch 1 and sc in the same st, [sc in the next st] x 3, [SP, 5 sc] x 11, SP, sc, slst in 1st sc.
(2 slst, 1 ch, 12 SP,, 60 sc)

Round 16: use the same color as in the previous round.
ch 1, [sc in the next st] x 71, cut yarn and make an invisible finish over the starting ch 1.
(72 sc)

Round 17:
Repeat round 15.

Round 18:
Repeat round 16.

Round 19:
Repeat round 15.

Round 20:
Repeat round 16.

Round 21:
Repeat round 15.

Round 22:
Repeat round 16.

The lid

Repeat rounds 1 -10 .
The lid consists of a double layer. Crochet rounds 1-10 twice.
The 2 layers do not have to be identical except for rounds 1, 2 and 10.
Use the same color for rounds 1 and 2 on both parts.
Also use the same color for round 10 on both parts.
There is no need to work away yarn ends as these will be between the layers.

Round 11: change color.
Start above any SP of the previous color.
Attach yarn with a slst, ch 1, [sc in the next st] x 3, [SP, 5 sc] x 11, SP, sc, cut yarn and make an invisible finish
over the starting ch 1.
(1 slst, 1 ch, 12 SP, 59 sc)

The loop and finish

Round 12: choose the same color as used in round 1, that will render a prettier finish
Ch 16, 15 slst starting from the 2nd ch from the hook, slst in the skipped ch, cut yarn, pull yarn through the loop
on the hook.
(16 ch, 16 slst)

Use a darning needle to insert both yarn ends of round 12 through the MR of both of the lid-parts.
Make sure the loop is on the right side of the lid.
Make sure that the wrong sides of both parts are facing each other.
Insert the yarn ends back through both layers through different stitches next to the MR.
The yarn ends are now sticking out next to the loop on top of the lid.
Insert the yarn ends through the MR of only 1 layer now. The yarn ends will be in between the 2 lid-parts.
Tie them together firmly with a double knot. You do not have to work away the yarn ends as they will be
between the 2 layers of the lid.

Round 13: use the same color as used in round 11.
Crochet through both loops of the st on both parts.
Hold the top of the lid, the side with the loop on it, facing you.
Start in any st of round 11.
Attach yarn with a slst, ch 1, [sc in the next st] x 71, cut yarn and make an invisible finish over the starting ch 1.
(1 slst, 72 sc)

Work away the last yarn-end.
Congratulations! Your #cottoncandycoaster set is ready.

I hope you enjoyed making this pattern and that you’re happy with the coasterset.
It is correct that the lid lays in the holder when the holder is empty.
If you rather have a lid that closes over the side of the holder, then you can easily add a couple of rounds to the
last round of the lid without increasing
