9th – Cases of Trade Protectionism

*Senator Richard Lugar in his article “Balancing Free Trade and Protectionism,” dated

July 23, 1986, noted examples of trade barriers in many parts of the world:

 MEXICO AND BRAZIL

- Maintain performance requirement that limits trade.

 GATT-ILLEGAL QUOTAS

- On leather and other products make it virtually impossible to enter the market.

 IN MOST LATIN AMERICAN COUNTRIES,

- Imports are controlled by licensing schemes and the same is done in INDIA.

 IN EUROPE,

- Government postal and telecommunication agencies procure only from

domestic suppliers.

 THE AUTHORITIES OF TAIWAN

- Maintain high tariffs. For example, tobacco monopoly discriminates against

U.S tobacco exports.

 THE EEC

- Or the European Economic Community restricts U.S participation in the

European market.

 CANADA

- Maintain high tariffs, especially on machinery.

 IN THE REPUBLIC OF KOREA,

- Foreigners cannot own real estate. They cannot enter in retail or wholesale

trade. Tobacco products cannot be imported.
