Hot weather concrete: Can be defined as job-site conditions that accelerate the rate of moisture loss or rate
of cement hydration of freshly mixed concrete, including an ambient temperature of 29°C or higher, and an
evaporation rate that exceeds 1 kg/m2/h.

Mass concrete: Any volume of structural concrete in which a combination of dimensions of the member
being cast, the boundary conditions, the characteristics of the concrete mixture, and the ambient conditions
can lead to undesirable thermal stresses, cracking, deleterious chemical reactions, or reduction in the long-
term strength as a result of elevated concrete temperature due to heat from hydration.
Self-consolidating concrete: Fresh concrete that can flow around and encapsulate reinforcement and
consolidate within formwork under its own weight without any mechanical consolidation and vibration.

18.2. Concrete shall be placed in accordance with ACI 301-16, ACI 304R and this standard. For hot weather
concreting requirements, as per SAES-Q-001 Section 7.27.

18.3. Place all concrete within the specified time by the batching plant written on concrete slip.

18.4. Handle concrete from the point of delivery and transfer to the concrete conveying equipment and to the
locations of final deposit as rapidly as practicable by methods which will prevent segregation and loss of
concrete mix materials.

18.5. Checking the temperature and concrete slump and the result will be recorded on the trip ticket. The
temperature of concrete from the batching plant to the point of discharge shall not exceed 35°C. The
concrete slump shall be at the range of 150 plus or minus 40 mm depending on the design mix.

18.6. Precautionary measures shall be taken during hot weather for batching, transporting & installation in
accordance with ACI 305R.

18.7. Pumped concrete shall be placed by pumping in accordance with recommendations contained in ACI
Standard 304.2R, Placing Concrete by Pumping Methods.

18.8. Provide mechanical equipment for conveying concrete to ensure a continuous flow of concrete at the
delivery end. Provide runways for wheeled concrete conveying equipment from the concrete delivery point
to the locations of final deposit. Keep interior surfaces of conveying equipment, including chutes, free of
hardened concrete, debris, water, and other deleterious materials.

18.9. Concrete crew of L & T shall deposit concrete continuously or in layers of such thickness that no concrete
shall be placed on concrete which has hardened sufficiently to cause the formation of seams or planes of
weakness within the section. If a section cannot be placed continuously, provide construction joints as
herein specified. Perform concrete placing at such a rate that concrete which is being integrated with fresh
concrete is still plastic. Deposit concrete as nearly as practicable to its final location to avoid segregation due
to re-handling or flowing. Do not subject concrete to any procedure which will cause segregation.

18.10. Concrete shall be deposited or pour as nearly as practicable to its final location to avoid segregation due to
re-handling of flowing.

18.11. Concrete shall not be dropped freely where reinforcement will cause segregation nor shall it be dropped
freely by more than one (1.0) meter.

18.12. Placed concrete shall be consolidated by the use of mechanical vibrating equipment supplemented by
manual spading, rod-ding and tamping. Equipment and procedure for the consolidation of concrete shall be
in accordance with SAES-Q-001, Sec 7.23.8.

18.13. Concrete shall be thoroughly worked around reinforcement and embedded items and into corners of forms,
eliminating all air or stone pockets which may cause honeycombs, pitting, or planes of weakness.

18.14. Concrete shall be placed in layers not more than eighteen (18) inches or 450 mm thickness. Vibrators shall
be inserted and withdrawn vertically at intervals of five to twenty seconds duration and at points 460 mm to
750 mm apart, penetrating previously placed fresh concrete.

18.15. Concrete crew shall not use vibrators to transport concrete inside of forms. Insert and withdraw vibrators
vertically at uniformly spaced locations not farther than the visible effectiveness of the machine. Place
vibrators to rapidly penetrate the layer of concrete and at least 150 mm into the preceding layer. Do not
insert vibrators into lower layers of concrete that have begun to set. At each insertion, limit the duration of
vibration to the time necessary to consolidate the concrete and complete embedment of reinforcement and
other embedded items without causing segregation of the mix.

18.16. A standby concrete vibrator shall be made available at site during concrete placement.

18.17. Raking shall not be used for movement of concrete after placement as referenced in SAES-Q-001 Section
8.16.4

18.18. The concrete surface shall be finished as per the requirement of approved drawings and specifications. The
concrete after consolidation shall be worked, leveled and finished with floats, straight edge, etc as applicable
to give desired finish.

18.19. Concrete shall be protected immediately after placement from premature drying, excessive hot or cold
temperature and mechanical disturbances. Curing materials shall be installed on all exposed surfaces after
finishing.

18.20. Concrete for Underground Ducts

18.20.1. Commence the excavation for the duct bank of appropriate width & depth given in the IFC
drawing in compliance to SAES-P-104, table 2 and/or AD-036874
18.20.2. Carry out the subgrade preparation & compaction. Compaction degree shall meet the
minimum requirements as required by SAES-A-114 for the compacted subgrade
18.20.3. Spread the sand bedding layer with 50mm minimum thickness
18.20.4. Put 0.25mm Plasticized Sheet over the sand bedding and side trench wall as well.
Afterwards, install the rebars & duct bank pipes inside the trench according to the
arrangements shown in the section details of IFC drawings. Separate each pipes using duct
bank pipe spacers. Install the spacers according to the manufacturer’s recommendation.
18.20.5. Concrete for underground duct envelopes shall be colored in accordance with SAES-T-911
for communication and SAES-P-104 Section 10.4 for electrical ducts respectively.

18.20.6. The top layer (5 mm minimum thickness) of the concrete shall be mixed with red dye as per
SAES-P-104 Section 10.3 or as per Section 10.4 and orange dye as per SAES-T-911
Section 7 commentary note.

18.20.7. Coloring admixtures shall be in accordance with ASTM C979/C979M. Concrete envelopes
for underground ducts and cover slabs for direct-buried cables can be colored by adding 6
kilograms of coloring oxide powder per cubic meter of concrete unless otherwise specified in
contract documents.

19. CURING OF CONCRETE

19.1. Structural concrete shall be cured in accordance with recommendations of ACI 301-10 unless otherwise
specified.

19.2. Maximum total dissolved solids in water used for curing shall not exceed 1000 parts per million (ppm).

19.3. Water curing shall be continuous until the compressive strength has reached 70% of the specified strength,
but not less than 7 days.

19.4. The saturated burlaps shall be covered with a plasticized sheet vapor barrier, minimum 0.15 mm (6 mils) in
thickness and shall be kept in contact with the concrete surface at all times.

19.5. Curing compound shall be in accordance with ASTM C309 or equivalent. Vendors shall supply datasheet
including third party test reports.

19.6. When no minimum concrete strength has been specified in the project specifications for form removal, form
removal shall be as per SAES-Q-001 Sec. 7.19.4 or ACI-310-10 Sec. 2.3.4

19.7. Coating of concrete surfaces shall be as per approved Coating of Concrete Surfaces Procedure by Saudi
Aramco.
