BUNKER LEAK TEST
CONTRACTOR NO.

1.0 SCOPE 1.1 This method statement shall be used by ICES, organization who will perform ,supervise and control work involving
radiography for Barzan Onshore Project .
2.0 PURPOSE 2.1 The use of a shielded bunker provides the benefit of allowing other work in the vicinity (but outside the bunker) to continue
without interruption and allowing radiography work to be carried out as required. A properly designed and constructed
bunker shall be used for the test and to use further for Radiography, with appropriate safety systems and warning systems,
which should be regularly tested and maintained. Such an bunker can be very effective in preventing accidents and keeping
radiation doses as low as reasonably achievable. Refer 5.2 for initial calculation.
Radiography shall be carried out inside shielded bunker whenever this is reasonably practicable and this bunker must be
approved by Client, prior to its first use.
3.0 REFERENCE 3.1 JGC SHE&S Plan (Parts 1 to 7) (B-S-B00-1100-001)
3.2 Radiography Safety Control Procedure (S-B00-1100-223)
3.3 Ministry of Environment (MOE). Decree No. 31 of the Year 2002
3.4 SHE&S TRAINING PLAN (S-B00-1100-051)
CONSTRUCTION RISK ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE (S-B00-1100-052)
SAFE WORK METHOD STATEMENT (SWMS) AND JOB SAFETY ANALYSIS (JSA) (S-B00-1100-232)
CONSTRUCTION PTW PROCEDURE (S-B00-1100-225)
TRANSPORTATION AND TRAFFICE MANAGEMENT PLAN (S-B00-1100-056)
Barricaded procedure (BF-S-B00-1100-234)

4.0 RESPONSIBILITY 4.1 The client is the organization or person responsible for hiring the operating organization to perform industrial radiography work.
The client should always use an operating organization that is authorized by the regulatory body in accordance with
regulatory requirements for industrial radiography
4.2 The client should give the operating organization sufficient lead time to plan the work and to carry it out safely, and to
enable compliance with any advance notifications required by the regulatory body.
4.3
The client should ensure that radiography work is coordinated with other work on-site, to minimize the risks to radiographers
arising from site specific hazards and to minimize radiation exposures to other workers. There should be special coordination if
more than one radiography organization is working on the client’s site at one time. A permit-to-work system can facilitate
communication and coordination of different jobs on the same site.

4.4 The operating organization (ICES) should ensure that suitable facilities and equipment are available, to enable radiography
work to be carried out safely and in accordance with regulatory requirements. In particular, radiography equipment should
incorporate all the relevant safety features and warning features. An adequate number of radiographers, assistants and
radiation protection officers should be available to perform the leak test. They should be provided with appropriate equipment
(such as radiation monitors) to enable the work to be carried out safely and effectively.

5.0 Procedure 5.1 The Radiographic Isotope Projector loaded with Max 50 Curie Ir-192 shall be transported to the Bunker Area with the safety
locks in position. It shall not be transported in the cab of the vehicle but in a storage box affixed to the vehicle. The box
shall have warning in English & Arabic. The vehicle shall be accompanied by classified person or RPO with calibrated survey
meter. The maximum reading shall be 2 mR/hr at surface of storage box. The radiation warnings signs shall be on the box and
vehicle.

RPO and his team of classified worker will organise their equipment including the barriers, signs, lights and isotope projection
equipment. The team will evacuate the area and erect barriers and signs at the pre-calculated safe distance.

RPO shall make sure that only authorized persons are allowed in the controlled area before starting the leak test. When
establishing radiation boundaries, the RPO should ensure that monitoring is carried out and ensure that the radiation level do
not exceed 7.5µSv/hour. Barriers shall be erected as required.

The design of the shielded bunker should include a drawing of the installation and its surroundings, including any adjacent
offices or site. The drawing should include dimensions, as well as the thicknesses, densities and types of shielding materials
on all sides of the exposure area.

Prior to the use of a bunker, leak tests should be performed by the operating organization, if necessary with the support of the
client, to confirm that the bunker as built meets all the safety requirements.

5.2 CALCULATION OF EXPOSURE RATE IN ONE BUNKER

CONDITION

TYPE OF ISOTOPE: SEALED Ir-192

INTENSITY OF ISOTOPE (MAXIMUM) - 50 Curie
QUANTITY OF ISOTOPE PER NDT BUNKER (MAXIMUM) - 1
GAMMA RAY CONSTANT (RHM) - 480 mR/h at 1 meter for 1 Curie
1. exposure rate of Ir- 192 at 1 meter for 50 Ci Source without Shielding : 480 mR/h x 50 Ci = 24,000 mR/h
2. Shielding Material-
Soil half value thickness: 75 mm (Approximately)
Bunker wall thickness : 2000 mm
3. Shielding Exposure Rate
Function: D = RHM x A x 1/ d2 exp (-0.693 x t x 1/T)
 D (mR/h): exposure rate
 RHM (mR/h): gamma-ray constant
 A (Ci): Intensity of Iridium
 d ( mm ) : distance from Isotope
 t ( mm ) : Shielding Material ( Soil) Thickness
 T (mm) : Half value of shielding material
480 mR/hr Ci. m x 50 Ci x 1/ (2m) 2 x (exp (-0.693 x (2000mm/75mm)) =5.89 x 10-5 mR/h
Controlled area barrier (Permissible Exposure Rate): 0.75 mR/ h

Conclusion:
 Calculated exposure rate is not over permissible exposure rate even for 2 meter soil shielding.
 Considering the scattered radiation, the wall thickness of 5meter of this bunker should be very much safe for the use
of 50 Curie Ir-192 open source.
 This shall be further checked and evaluated during the actual leak test of bunker

5.3 Bunker for industrial radiography using radioactive sealed sources must provide sufficient shielding to reduce the radiation
dose rate to 7.5 μSv h at any point on the surface of the outside wall of the bunker. Additional shielding is to be provided for
facilities in constant use. New facilities are to be designed, where reasonably practicable, to provide sufficient shielding such
that the external dose rate will not exceed 2.5 μSv h.

5.4 A suitable portable survey meter should be available for measuring dose rates outside the shielded bunker. The measurements
should be made at a range of positions around the bunker, including the operator’s position and adjacent occupied areas. The
measured dose rates should be compared with reference levels. In the event of dose rates being higher than the reference levels,
the work should be terminated and advice should be sought from the radiation protection officer.

Collimators and additional shielding should be used as appropriate to minimize potential exposure

Barriers and sign boards should be used to define the controlled area, dose rates should be monitored around the barriers, and
continuous supervision should be provided to ensure that no one enters the controlled area.

6.0 Safety 6.1 The crew should wear personal protective equipment such as coverall, safety shoe, safety goggle, helmet or as required by the
client as well as TLD, Dosimeter and Bleeper.
Adequate radiation sign boards will be placed around the barricaded areas where the test being carried out for the awareness
and for the personnel who are not involved in testing
JSA & MS shall be attached to work permit prior to commencing of test.
7.0 General All requirements shall be completed prior to start bunker leak test
