Objective of the Project:

Automation has become important in today’s world as it helps to complete a task with lesser
human assistance and in a smarter way. Institutions are becoming smarter and more
developed these days with the help of automation devices. Electrical appliances are using
remote-controlled switches rather than conventional switches. In today’s world, most people
have access to smartphones and its use has become very popular and essential in our lives.
We can use smartphones to control appliances with just one click or one message. With the
help of controllers and communication devices, these appliances can be remotely controlled.
In this project, we are using the Arduino UNO board to develop the Smart Lab Automation
project with the HC-05 Bluetooth module remotely controlled by a smartphone and sensors.

Brief Description of the Project:

The lab appliances are automated using the motion detector sensor (infrared sensor) such that
when the person enters the vicinity of the sensor. The appliances get turned on and when the
person exits the vicinity of the sensor, the appliances get turned off. Along with it, the light
detector sensors (LDR) are used near the windows so that the lab lights get turned on or off
when the natural light reaches a certain level. The range of the PIR sensor is within 10 m. The
PIR sensor sends an electronic signal to MSP430 which in turn will send an electronic signal
to the relay. The relay has three important terminals apart from coil terminals namely
common, normally open and normally close, The wire from normal open and common wire
are being attached to the bulb. When the movement is detected the bulb glows.

Project Related to Local Problems:

● Due to neglect, the appliances remain turned on. As a result, a lot of precious energy
is wasted. With lab automation, one does not have to worry about turning off the
appliances.
● Lab automation systems are convenient for people in this fast-paced world. It is not
only environmentally friendly but also economical.

● People with disabilities, they can make their lives easier by automatically
detecting their presence and switching on the lights.

Commercial application:
Excess energy consumption is a big problem in the labs of universities. The appliances
themselves draw heavy energy, and the appliances remaining turned on without usage, it
increases the problem more. A lab automation system makes the whole lab smart. Thus,
saving energy and money to a large extent.
