Population Density

The number of persons living in a particular region in relation to the land area can be termed population density. This is of paramount importance to
the policy makers who use this information to help make decisions about the distribution of important resources.

Let us get practical!!

Let us say, for example, that the population size of St. Kitts is 50,000 and the land area is 5,000 km2, using the information above, what would be the
population density of St. Kitts?

Calculation of population density- (the formula)

Total population of St. Kitts ═ 50,000 people

Area of St.Kitts ═ 5,000 km2 ═ 10 persons per km2

Try to calculate the densities of the following countries:

(Based on 2004 estimates)

Countries Area (km²) Population Density

Jamaica 10,991 2,713,130
St. Lucia 616 164,213
Guyana 214,969 705,803
Antigua
442 68,320
and Barbuda
Montserrat 102 10,581
Belize 22,965 272,945
647 persons
Barbados 430 278,289
per km²
