BACKGROUND OF THE ACTIVITY

ACTIVITY SLAC on The Importance of School-Based Action Research
PARTIPANTS All SHS teachers, all Teacher II and III of SUA NHS and Guindapunan ES
DATE October 21, 2022
VENUE Grade 11-Malikhain Classroom
OBJECTIVES
The objectives of the SLAC are:
1. Define research or action research;
2. Know the importance of conducting a school-based research;
3. Identify a researchable classroom-based problem which can be the
focus of research;
4. Appreciate the importance of conducting school-based action
research.

PRELIMINARIES
As participants to the division seminar-workshop on research, Mr.
Teodolo B. Resco Jr., the school head, and Mr. John Alvin A. Mabag, the
school research coordinator, were in-charged to facilitate the second SLAC
for the month. They had prepared the needed materials in advance such as:
laptop, multimedia presentation, attendance sheet, and issued a form slip to
inform the teacher-participants of the said activity. Prior to the formal
conduct of the session, Mr. Resco assigned Mr. Melvin G. Jabiñar, a grade 7
teacher-adviser to be the in-charge for the preparation of activity completion
reports (ACR).
The activity started with the filling up of the attendance sheet at around
1:05 o’ clock in the afternoon but formally started at around 1:30 o’ clock
due to rainy weather. Following after was the SLAC proper with a short
introduction delivered by Mr. Mabag being 1st resource speaker. He shortly
explained the main reason of choosing the topic as the focus of the present
activity.

PROCEEDINGS
During the priming activity, Mr. Mabag grouped the participants into
three and asked them to write their own understanding as to the meaning of
research and its importance. After about 5 minutes brainstorming, each group
had presented their outputs through their representative in front of the other
participants. After presenting the different outputs, the facilitator analyzed
and came up with the common responses. The majority of the participants
answered that research is a process of gathering, analyzing, interpreting data

in order to solve an existing problem or understand a certain phenomenon.
As to the importance of research, the following responses revealed: 1)
Research is useful for making decision or policy; 2) It provides solutions to
the many problems of humanity, society and of the world; and 3) It is useful
for career advancement and promotion of human resource in any
organization. He appreciated much the effort of each group and recognized
their active participation through giving them a clap and words of thanks.
Before he proceeded to the formal discussion of his topic, he challenged the
participants to check if their responses are similar if not the same in his
discussion.
During the discussion of Mr. Mabag, he briefly define the meaning of
research and explained its importance using a laptop instead of a projector
due to power interruption. He further stressed that teachers should also
endeavor to conduct action research in order to find solutions to the many
problems that affect the academic performance of the learners. After his
topic, Mr. Resco, the second resource speaker followed. He briefly discussed
the process in identifying a researchable problem using gap analysis and
other tool which can be of great help in defining and identifying a problem.
Following after was a short discussion on how to write a title based on a
specific problem. In his discussion, he emphasized the four elements that
must be present in crafting a title namely: problematic situation, subject of
the study, intervention (strategy or innovation) and effect. He presented some
examples of action research title and guided the participants on how the
elements are arranged. Before he ended his topic, he encouraged the
participants to download DM No. 144, s. 2017 for reference and guidance.
Following after was a short workshop on identifying the elements of an
action research title and making of title based on a problem presented. A
short critiquing on the presented title was observed.
As an assignment to the participants, they were tasked to identify some
problems in their respective class and diagnose the chosen problem. Said
problem can be their priority as they start writing their action research.
Having no more questions and clarifications, the session ended at around
4:00 o” clock in the afternoon.

HIGHLIGHT OF THE
