Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of

polynomial function.

Performance Standards: The learner is able to conduct systematically a mathematical

investigation involving polynomial functions in different fields.

Objectives:
a. Describe the behavior of the graph using the Leading Coefficient Test.
b. Identify the number of turning points and the behavior of the graph based on the
multiplicity of zeros.
c. Value accumulated knowledge as means of new understanding.

Investigate the graph of P(x) = a(x+3)m(x+1)n by moving the sliders a, m and n,

then answer the guide questions below.
1. What happens to the graph of the polynomial function as you vary the value of
a?
2. How will you relate the roots (x-intercepts) to the degree of the polynomial?
3. What is the relationship between the degree of the polynomial and the number
of turning points?
4. How will you describe the graph of the polynomial function if the degree is
odd? even?
5. Based on the key features identified from the graph, write a possible equation
to model the graph. Consider the leading coefficient, the degree and the x-
intercepts.
