IV. PROCEDURES

A. Reviewing previous lesson or Review on yesterday’s discussion - determining the intercepts, zeroes, and asymptotes of an
Motivation exponential function
( Let the students prepare their materials: one colored piece of paper, one graphing paper,
pencil, ruler)
Ask the students to choose their partner.
Fold- and -Cut Activity ( Work by Pairs)
1. Get a piece of colored paper. Fold it along the middle, then cut the paper along the
fold. How many pieces of paper do you have now?
2. Put the pieces of paper so they fit together exactly. Fold them again along the
middle, then cut the pieces of paper along the fold. How many pieces do you have

No. of folds (x) 1 2 3

B. Activity No. of pieces of paper f(x)
now?
3. Again, put the pieces of paper so they fit together exactly. Fold them again along the
middle, then cut the pieces of paper along the fold. How many pieces do you have
now?
4. Repeat the above procedure, two or three more times, then fill out the table below.
5. On your graphing paper, plot the pairs of numbers (the number of folds, the no. of
pieces of paper) you obtained from the table. Connect them with smooth curve. This
is the graph of the function.
6. Ask two pairs to present their output and graph it in the graphing board.
C. Analysis 1. Look at the table of values, do you see patterns? Based from the values obtained, is
the function increasing or decreasing?
2. What have you noticed on the number of pieces of paper as the number of folds
increases? Could the data be written in a different form?
3. How many pieces of paper are created after 7 folds? 10 folds?
4. If the form axis used, a represents the base and x is the exponent. Then in this
situation, 2 would be our base and the number of folds is represented by x. The new
table of values would be:

No. of folds (x) 1 2 3 4 5

No. of pieces of paper f(x) 21 22 23 24 25
What is now the equation? f(x) = 2x

Exponential functions are functions in which the variable appears in the exponent. The
exponential function with base a is defined for all real numbers x by

f(x) = ax, where a > 0 and a ≠ 1.

D. Abstraction
Just as in any exponential expression, a is called the base and x is the exponent. The base a is
restricted to positive real numbers to ensure that f(x) is always a real number. Also, base a
cannot be equal to 1, for if a=1, then f(x) = ax will be f(x) = 1, and will be a constant function.

Human Population Growth

One of the serious concerns of government policy makers is the growth of population. It
is believed that the growth of population follows and exponential pattern.

1. The initial population at Barangay 127 is 10, 000 people. Barangay 127 grows at a constant
rate of 10 percent per year. How many people are there in Barangay 127 after 4 years?

Solution:
The population grows by the same percentage per year, so this represents an exponential
function. Barangay 127’s population grows at a constant rate of 10 % per year.
The population at the end of each year is equal to the population at the beginning of the year
E. Application
plus 0.10 of the population at the beginning of the year.

Population at the end of year 1: 10 000 + 0.10 ( 10 000 ) = 11 000

Population at the end of year 2: 11 000 + 0.10 ( 11 000 ) = 12 100
Population at the end of year 3: 12 100 + 0.10 ( 12 100 ) = 13 310
Population at the end of year 4: 13 310 + 0.10 ( 13 310 ) = 14 641

There are 14 641 people in Brgy. 127 after 4 years. The problem can be solved using the
formula:
P = 10 000 (1.10)t where P is the total population after t years.
NOTE: When creating a table of values, always suggest starting with the numbers x = –2, –1,
0, 1, and 2 because it is important to have different types of numbers, some negative, some
positive, and zero.

F. Evaluation Graph each group of functions in one coordinate plane. Construct first a table of values of
each function.
1. f(x) = 2x, f(x) = 3x, f(x) = 4x

2. f(x) = (1/3)x, f(x) = (1/2)x, f(x) = (1/1.7)x

G. Assignment Using the graph (assessment method) that you have, answer the following questions.

What do you notice about these graphs?

a. Are they rising or falling (as x increases)?

b. Do the curves have any point in common?

c. What portion of the coordinate plane do the curves occupy?

d. Does this imply something about the range of the function?

e. What happens as a gets larger?

f. Does the curve rise faster when a is larger?
