Team retros allow us to reflect on what went well, what did not go well, and what we can improve on based on our recently completed project. It’s a time for us to learn from our wins and losses with the objective of improving the way we work in future projects.

What is the research problem?

The research problem is the heart of a study. It is

clear, definite statement of the area of concern or
investigation and is backed by evidence.

Sources of research problem?

Real life and scholarly arena

Appropriate Research Problem

Supported by literature
Significant
Timely
Novel
Specific and clear
Researchable
Research Objectives

Research objectives should summarize

what you hope will be achieved by the
study and identify variables to be
measured.

General and specific

Select appropriate research design

The choice of the appropriate study

design depends upon the way the
research question is stated.
Select sample

Sampling is a method that allows

researchers to infer information about a
population based on results from a
subset of the population, without having
to investigate every individual.
Collect Data

Data collection is the process of

gathering and measuring information
on variables of interests.
Analyze Data

Data analysis is the process inspecting,

cleaning, transforming, and modeling
data to discover useful information.
Present Results

Write your research paper to show

others the information you were able to
obtain and how it relates to your
hypothesis.
Example

Topic Side effects of chemotherapy

Nausea and vomiting are common side effects among patients on

Research Problem chemotherapy, and interventions to date have been only moderately
(problem statement) successful in reducing these effects. New interventions that can reduce or
prevent these side effects need to be identified.

Statement of Purpose The purpose of the study is to compare the effectiveness of patient-
controlled versus nurse-administered antiemetic therapy for controlling
nausea and vomiting in patients on chemotherapy.

Research question What is the relative effectiveness of patient-controlled antiemetic therapy

versus nurse-controlled antiemetic therapy with regard to (1) medication
consumption and (2) control of nausea and vomiting in patients on
chemotherapy

Hypotheses Subjects receiving antiemetic therapy by a patient-controlled pump will (1)

be less nauseous, (2) vomit less, and (3) consume less medication than
subjects receiving nurse-administered therapy.
