Introduction
• Humayun’s tomb is the tomb of Mughal Emperor
Humayun, commissioned by his wife Hamida Banu
Begum.
• Was the first garden tomb in India.
• It was built under the patronage of Humayun’s son,
the great Emperor Akbar.
• The garden is divided into four parts by two bisecting
wayer channels with paved walkways.
• The garden design of Humayun’s Tomb has inspired
the construction of many monuments, including the
iconic Taj Mahal.
• It is also called the ‘dormitory of the Mughals’ as in
the cells are buried over 150 Mughal family members.

COLOUR AND TEXTURE
The texture of the tomb is combination of
rough of sandstone and the soft of white
marble.

Because of use of red sandstone and white


marbel the colour of the entire structure is
red and white. Somewhere yellow and
black due to yellow sandstone and black
marbel for detailing.

It has an irregular octagon plan with four long sides
and chamfered edges. It is surmounted by a 42.5 m high
double dome clad with marble flanked by pillared kiosks
(chhatris) and the domes of the central chhatris are
adorned with glazed ceramic tiles.
In the tomb

The tomb contains three levels (platform,


plinth, and main tomb) and the outer view of
all are similar to the irregular octagonal prism
whose length of four faces are very large as
compare to other four faces.
Here also it looks like a cuboid is cut vertically
from the four corner edges at angle of 45
degree with its corresponding faces.
And the double layered dome stand on the
base of cylinder like structure.

All the arches are of similar pattern even of


windows.
DIMENSIONS

the plinth is 91 metres (299 ft) wide, and
was the first Indian building to use the
Persian double dome on a high neck drum,
and measures 42.5 metres (139 ft), and is
topped by 6 metres (20 ft) high brass
final ending in a crescent , common in
Timurid tombs.
