UE Discipline Procedures (Reminder)

January 13, 2023

“Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.” Rohn J.

Dear Parents of Grades 4, 5 and 6 Students,

Believing in open communication between parents and administration, we would like to remind you
about the preventative discipline procedures in Upper Elementary Division.

Since the first school day, all staff members started establishing expectations, procedures, routines, and
class rules for behavior in order to proactively prevent any disruptions in the future. These rules and
expectations were and are being constantly and consistently reinforced and modeled by teachers and
supervisors. Expectations are posted in classes and in hallways (always visible to students).

A. Supportive and Corrective Approach

Supportive approach is applied in case of first-time disruption. The supervisor/teacher discusses the
issue with the child and encourages him/her to correct the behavior.

Corrective approach is followed when a student has failed to change his/her behavior after repeated
attempts at supportive discipline. It refers to the consequences (find below) delivered following an
infraction.

1. Consequence 1: Fix it ticket

The fix it ticket displays the expectation that the student should work on.
The fix it ticket does not deduct grades from the student’s conduct. It’s a restorative approach and
it focuses on the expectations that are not met. The student should discuss the situation with his/her
parents and answer the question “What will I do to improve my behavior?”
Parents sign it and the student returns it to school the next day.

2. Consequence 2: Verbal Warning

The student who doesn’t correct his/her behavior after receiving the fix it ticket will receive a
verbal warning. The verbal warning is signed by the student. The teacher/supervisor keeps the
warning with him/her.

3. Consequence 3: Written Warning

If the incident reoccurs (even after receiving a verbal warning), the teacher/supervisor assigns a
written warning. The written warning deducts points from the 100 points conduct that the student
has at the beginning of the school year (Student and Parent Handbook p.16).

B. Major Offences
• In case of verbal abuse, physical abuse, school property abuse, or any major incident, written
warning is directly issued (without passing through fix it tickets and verbal warnings).

• Electronic Devices are not allowed. These devices include and are not restricted to cell phones,
cameras, iPads/tablets, music players, smart watches etc… Any violation of this policy will
result in the immediate confiscation of the device which will, then, remain with the School
Administration until the end of the school year. Accordingly, the student will receive a demerit.

C. Merit slip
A merit slip rules out one written warning slip provided that both are given by the same
teacher/supervisor and that the student improved his/her behavior.

D. Exceptional Behavior Award

Constructive feedback, continuous encouragement, and acknowledgment help our students

achieve higher standards and boost their self-esteem.

For this reason, an “Exceptional Behavior Award” certificate which will be given at the end of every
term to the student who does not have any fix it ticket, warning, and repetitive remarks from all
his/her teachers and supervisors.

If a student gets 3 certificates per year (at the end of every term), his/her name will be posted on
the “Honor Board” for excellent behavior in the division.
