Acid bases and salts

30 June 2021 10:42

Acids are sour in taste and turn blue litmus to red.

Bases are bitter and turn red litmus to blue.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF ACIDS :-

• ACID REACTS WITH METAL
When acid reacts with metal it forms hydrogen gas and salts are
formed .

• ACIDS REACT WITH METALLIC OXIDES

When acids reacts with metallic oxides they form water and salt .

 Metallic oxides are acidic in nature and non-metallic oxides are basic in
nature.

• ACIDS REACT WITH METAL CARBONATE

When acids react with metal carbonate or metal hydrogen carbonate it
forms salt , carbon dioxide and water .

• BASICITY OF AN ACID

It indicates how strong an acid is when h+ ion is released in aquous

solution.

1. Strong acid + strong base= neutrilised solution

2. Strong acid + weak base = acidic in nature
3. Weak acid + strong base = basic in nature
4. Weak based + weak acid= neutralised solution

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES OF BASES :-

 When base is mixed with water, the solution is said to be alkaline in
nature.

 BASES REACT WITH METAL

When bases react with metal it forms salt and hydrogen Gas .
 BASES REACT WITH METALLIC OXIDES
When bases react with metallic oxides they form water and salt
 ACIDITY OF BASES
It indicates how strong a base is when OH- ions are disassociated.
1. Strong base+strong acid= neutrilised solution
2. Strong base+weak acid= basic in nature
3. Weak base+strong acid=acidic in nature
4. Weak base+weak acid=neutrilised solution
