AILMENT SUGGESTED HERBAL MEDICINE


1. DIABETES  Okra or the lady’s finger -it also improves
the body’s sensitivity to insulin which is
very helpful in the treatment of diabetes.
Okra can be included in the diet of a
diabetic person in the form of vegetables
and curries. Okra benefits by lowering the
blood glucose or blood sugar levels in
diabetes patients.

 Aloe Vera is known to have several health


benefits for diabetic patients. Regular
consumption of this herb by diabetics can
help decrease the total lipid count,
smoothening of the digestive system,
while also reducing other diabetes related
complications.

In order to ensure the smooth flow of


insulin, doctors advise taking the juice of
the plant twice a day. Taking Aloe Vera
juice regularly in this manner will not only
stabilize the blood glucose levels but all
the blood vessels which get damaged due
to the onset of diabetes and other reasons
shall be restored as well.

2. HIGH CHOLESTEROL  Artichoke

The scientific name for this herb is Cynara


scolymus. Artichoke is a member of the
Sunflower family. Studies conducted on
patients have shown that regular usage of
this herb can lower cholesterol levels by
18% in just one month! Two important
chemicals named cybarin and luteolin are
responsible for Artichoke’s cholesterol-
fighting properties.

 Alfalfa

The leaves of this herb have medicinal


properties and are used to treat a broad
spectrum of diseases. The Alfalfa leaves
contain chemicals called saponins which
help in lowering the cholesterol by
interfering in their absorption in the
intestines.

3. TOOTH ACHE  Turmeric

Turmeric is known as instant teeth


whitener despite its dark color. Using
turmeric for toothache is the right choice
since turmeric has antimicrobial properties
that fight infection in the tooth.

How to Use It

Add a teaspoon of turmeric to half a glass


of water and rinse your mouth with it. This
will prevent any tooth infections. You can
even apply a paste of turmeric and milk on
your gums to keep them healthy.

 Cinnamon

Cinnamon is rich in calcium, which can help


strengthen your teeth. Whole cinnamon also
contains active ingredients that can relieve
toothache temporarily.

How to Use It
Grind a cinnamon stick to a fine powder.
Add 3 tablespoons of honey to one
tablespoon of the cinnamon powder and
make a paste. Apply the paste on the
hurting tooth. This will not just help tooth
decay but also relieve bad breath.

4. BAD BREATH  Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

Peppermint is another aromatic herb


which can be used as an herbal remedy
for bad breath (halitosis).

It can either be used as an infusion or


decoction to make a gargle or the pure
mint oil can be added (1-5 drops per cup)
to lukewarm water and also can be used
as a gargle.

 Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus)

Eucalyptus is a tree native to Australia,


which contains a volatile oil named
eucalyptol.

The strong-smelling oil is used in an


ointment to rub on the chest for the
treatment of upper respiratory tract
infections. It is also contained in many
lozenges for internal use.

A gargle made from a decoction of 1 cup


of water with 1-5 drops of oil can be used
as a natural remedy for halitosis.

5. DIARRHEA
 Thyme is one of the most popular herbs
in the catalog of alternative treatments for
ailments that affect the digestive system. It is
soothing and contains nutrients that help
improve health in cases of diarrhea.

Its compounds help keep bowel


movements and the digestive process  in
balance. In addition, it’s antimicrobial
and prevents certain infections.

Ingredients
 1 cup of water (250 ml)
 1 teaspoon thyme (5 g)

Preparation
 Boil a cup of water and, when it
reaches a boil, add the teaspoon
of thyme.
 Let it cool for 10 minutes and
strain it.

 Peppermint is a digestive tonic that can


stop many stomach symptoms. In addition to
stopping diarrhea, it balances the bacterial flora
and decreases the production of acidic juices.

These properties help keep the pH of


the stomach in balance, avoiding
inflammatory problems or recurrent
pain.

Ingredients
 A cup of water (250 ml)
 1 tablespoon mint leaves  (15 g)
 1 tablespoon of honey (25 g)

Preparation
 Boil a cup of water and add the
mint leaves.
 Cover the tea and let it steep for
10 minutes.
 After this time, filter it with a
sieve and sweeten it with a
spoonful of honey.

6. WOUNDS  Chamomile
Chamomile is an all purpose herb with
multiple benefits. One of these is its ability
to cure wounds. You can take
the flowers of this herb and crush them.
Place the flower paste directly on the
wound and this will help to heal the wound
with ease and effectiveness.

 Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera is anti-inflammatory and
antibacterial. This herb can be used for
curing wounds because it soothes the skin
and leads to effective scab formation in
the case of wounds. Aloe Vera is available
in gel form and it can also be extracted
directly from the leaves of this herbal plant
and applied on the injury or wound.

7. ASTHMA  Oregano
Oregano is a powerful herb for treating
asthma. Along with anti-inflammatory
properties, it contains carvacrol,
flavonoids and terpenes that work as lung-
cleansing elements.

This herb can reduce inflammation of the


respiratory tract and bronchial tubes, thus
providing relief from asthma symptoms.

 Drink 2 to 3 cups of oregano tea


daily when suffering from asthma.
To make the tea, steep 3 teaspoon
of oregano in 1 cup of hot water for 5
to 10 minutes. Strain, add honey as
per taste and drink it.
 Alternatively, take 1 tablespoon of
juice extracted from fresh oregano
leaves a few times a day to relieve
asthma symptoms and chronic
coughs.

 Ginger
Another well-known herb used for treating
asthma is ginger. It has anti-inflammatory
properties that help reduce airway
inflammation and inhibit airway
contraction.
According to a study presented at the
American Thoracic Society 2013
International Conference, several
compounds in ginger may help relax
smooth muscle tissue in the airways,
which is constricted during asthma
attacks. Further studies, however, are still
required

 Drink 2 to 3 cups of ginger tea daily.


To make the tea, add 1inch of ginger
(cut into small pieces) to a pot of
boiling water. Simmer for 10
minutes, strain, allow it to cool and
drink it.
 Another option is to mix equal
amounts of ginger juice,
pomegranate juice and honey.
Consume 1 tablespoon of this
mixture 2 or 3 times a day.
 You can also take ginger
supplements after consulting your
doctor.

8. COUGH  Peppermint is well known for their


healing and sedative properties. Methanol
in peppermint soothes the throat and acts
as a decongestant helping in break down
of mucus. The herb loosens chest
congestion and breaks up phlegm in the
lungs and respiratory tracts. You can use
peppermint essential oil made from

How to Use?

 Add 6-8 drops of peppermint essential oil


in a bowl of hot water
 Bend over the bowl and cover yourself and
the bowl with a blanket or towel
 Now inhale the steam

 Sage has been used as a cold


and flu medicine for thousands of years.
One of the most excellent herbs for cough,
sage, not only helps in soothing the cough
but also acts as a pain reliever
antibacterial herb, that can treat sore
throat as well. It is also an effective herb
during fever and tames coughs with its
astringent properties.

How to Use?

 Chop the sage and garlic, then add it to a


medium saucepan until simmering
 Allow it to cool and add some honey, close
and let steep for 8 minutes
 Strain and add the syrup to a clean glass
jar with a lid
 Consume this twice a day until you feel
like your symptoms have reduced

9. BURNS/CUT  Aloe Vera

Aloe vera gel relieves pain and


inflammation and speeds the healing
process.

Aloe has been used since ancient times,


and modern research has supported the
effectiveness of this natural herbal remedy
to treat burns, including frostbite and the
burns caused by radiation therapy.
 Lavender

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) pure
essential oil is considered by many
aromatherapists as one of the premier
remedies for burns.

It is antiseptic and analgesic and is the


only essential oil that can be applied
directly to the skin without dilution.

10. SORE THROAT  Sage

Why use it?

Sage is a herb used in various recipes,


but it is now becoming popular as a herb
good for sore throat(2). Apart from this, it
is believed to have antibacterial,
antiseptic, astringent, and anti-
inflammatory properties.

How to use it?

You could prepare a spray or consume it


as a tea. For tea, add one tablespoon of
fresh sage leaves in a cup of boiling
water. Boil this for 10-15 minutes. You
could use two tablespoons of dried sage
leaves if you don’t have fresh leaves.
Strain and if you desire, you could add
honey with lemon to it. You could
use sage tea for gargling.

 Ginger

Why use it?

Ginger is one of the best herbs for a sore


throat. Ginger has excellent medicinal
values. It is known to have anti-bacterial,
anti-oxidative, and anti-inflammatory
properties. It detoxifies your body,
improves blood circulation, and works
wonders on your immune system.

How to use it?

There are many ways to use ginger for a


sore throat. One of them is making ginger
root tea. For this, you need to boil one-liter
water. Now add one tablespoon of peeled
and grated ginger root to this. Cover and
let it soak for around 10 minutes. Now
strain it and add honey and lemon to it.
This will not only enhance the taste but
also will work better for your throat
infection. Alternatively, you could also use
ginger for a sore throat by chewing raw
ginger, using ginger seasoning or powder,
ginger lozenge, and candy.
