Let’s take a quick test. Which one of these are things that you’d say?
“The art market is saturated.”

“Nobody else does what I do in the way I do it.”
“No one will pay for my art”

“I can make good money with my art”
“I have to take any job that comes my way”

“I have a vision and I work for projects that align with it”
If most of your answers are you have a Thriving Artist Mindset and you’re well on
your way to getting what you want.
If most of your answers are you lean towards a Starving Artist Mindset and is
undermining your growth.
But wait, first I want to tell you that there’s nothing wrong with you. In fact, most
artists have a Starving Artist Mindset.
I know I did–big time! And this was getting in the way of doing better work, charging
more, and having more time to spend with family and friends.
Perhaps you grew up in a household where you were told to get a “real job” instead.
Or you heard a teacher saying that there are too many artists out there.
Or you may be surrounded by artist friends that gave up on their dreams altogether.
It’s tough to believe that you can make it when people around you tell you that you
won’t. No wonder many of us give up and go get a job somewhere.
But times have changed and there’s never been a better time to make an impact with

your art. It’s time to rewrite that narrative, this is the time for artists to thrive.
This Manifesto contains 12 proclamations that define the path and commitments
that artists make today to thrive with their art.
Taking this path takes courage and requires you to challenge old limiting beliefs.
This may not be your path, it’s up to you to decide. But if it is, we’ll be waiting for you
on the other side.
We will make work
that stands out
We will put our work front and center
because we understand that this is our great
contribution to making this a better world. We
will take our work seriously and be invested in
it, to make it good, great, outstanding.

We will not hide
behind our art
We will own what we do, be proud of it, and
recognize that our unique history, path, and
perspective is a necessary, undetachable part of our
art. We will acknowledge that our singular place
in this world is the cause and source of our work.
Instead of letting the work speak for itself, we will
be ready to stand out for it and explain to the world
why it matters.
We will stop victimizing
ourselves and develop our
confidence
We will take pride in being a working artist and be
confident about it. We will not speak poorly about
ourselves, our art or performance, likewise, we will not
let others talk us down just because we have chosen
– let’s be honest – to go down the best path you can
choose in this life: being an artist.
We will seek criticism
and guidance
We will acknowledge that progress doesn’t happen in
isolation and that other people can show us the way.
We will leave our comfort zone and make what it takes
to get good at what we do. We will seek feedback and
guidance because we know that we cannot figure
everything out on our own.
We will have systems
and avoid chaos
We will embrace consistency, frameworks, and
structure. We won’t buy into the chaotic artist
prototype because we know that this undermines our
growth and our possibilities to achieve our vision.
We will have a
vision and a plan
We will strive to accomplish something bigger than
ourselves. We will have a north and an agenda, and
despite distractions along the way, we will know
where we are heading. Our vision will keep us
focused and away from the nonsense pursuit of the
next gig, the next follower, the next distraction.
We will be resourceful
We will never stop learning within and beyond
our craft. We will embrace a holistic approach to
developing our skills because we know that making
great work and being able to make an impact with it
requires other skills than “just making the art”.
We will build community
over competition
Because we know our community influences us, we
will seek for open-minded, forward-looking people
to surround ourselves with. We won’t waste time or
energy creating rivalry or competition because we
know that conflict can only drain our creative energy
and shift our focus from what matters the most.
We will make money
with our art
We will acknowledge and remind others that the
fact that we love our work is no reason not to
charge for it. We will make money with our art
because we understand that money is what allows
us to continue doing more of what we do so great
and that no one else can do.
We will educate
our clients
We know that our work helps brands, companies,
and individuals sell their products, connect with an
audience, entertain themselves, tell their stories,
and therefore is valuable. We will make our clients
appreciate it, charge accordingly, and with that help
create a bigger shift in our industry.
We will take care of our health,
mind, and relationships
We will acknowledge that we have turned our hobbies
into our jobs and therefore boundaries become
extremely necessary. We will avoid burnout and
overworking ourselves by intentionally taking care of
our health, mind and relationships because we know

We will redefine what
success looks like
We feel deeply connected with our work but this will not
be the only thing through which we will find fulfillment.
We will understand that success is not defined by the
number of followers on our social media, or the size of the
clients we work for, but is determined by the impact and
the legacy we can make with our work and the meaningful
connections we can create in our lives.
Successful artists all have one thing in common – they’ve
trained their minds and didn’t let old narratives get in the
way of achieving their goals.
