Slope of a Line
The slope of a line in the plane containing the x and y axes is
generally represented by the letter m and is defined as the
change in the y coordinate divided by the corresponding
change in the x coordinate, between two distinct points on
the line.

Using Coordinate to Find Slope
Find the slope of the line through (-6,4) and the origin.

Example 1
Show that a line through P1(12,8) and Q1(4,8) is parallel
to the line through P2(3,1) and Q2(-6,1)
( x1 , y1 ) = P1 (12,8) ( x1 , y1 ) = P2 ( 3,1)
( x2 , y2 ) = Q1 ( 4,8) ( x2 , y2 ) = Q2 ( -6,1) Since the slope are

Example 2
Is the line through the points P1(7,-1) and Q1(10,2) perpendicular
to the line through the points P2(0,-4) and Q2(1,-5)
( x1 , y1 ) = P1 ( 7, -1) ( x1 , y1 ) = P2 ( 0, -4 ) The slopes are the
