Reflection

Does ethics have a role in education and science?

The distinguishing principle of virtue ethics is that our moral right and wrong
standard must be derived from an understanding of how the perfectly virtuous actor
would discriminate between the two. Thus, virtue ethics is an alternative to both
utilitarian theory and normative ethics, which find the important criteria in either creating
good outcomes or achieving the standards of moral responsibility.

Although the moral standards to be satisfied are set by the scientific and
education community, the moral obligation to behave with integrity is utterly general.
However, the requirement to anchor collaborative actions in trust is widespread. This
implies that students should be made aware of the ethical obligations that are included
into the courses they are learning throughout their education. And they should be given
the chance to cultivate the qualities that are essential to the activities in which they
engage. This is true not only for academic courses, but also for other pursuits such as
music and athletics. To emphasize the ethical criteria at the center of an activity,
whether football, history, mathematics, or marching band, is not to divert attention away
from the ‘real' topic, but rather to improve comprehension of that subject. Moral
education is a component of any meaningful education (Elgin, 2011)

In Conclusion, indeed ethics plays a great role both in education and in science.
It will be a catalyst that is needed to give integrity-based results, especially at this new
normal where Academic Honesty seems a lost cause.
