Problem in operations:

Logistic delays are the main problem in operations. Whenever there is uncertainty in weather
conditions the plucking process of kinow from farm gets delayed which also delays the further
processes and it results in delay in the delivery time that becomes very hard to match.

Causes from problem:

If the delivery gets delayed and they miss the vessel, they will have to wait for 1 week for next
vessel, which will result in paying extra for storage and plugging at port for 7 days and will also
affect the reputation of a company.

Solution and recommendations:

The operations problem that ARIF Best Quality Fruits has been facing is Logistics delays caused
by traffic and weather (when it rains heavily). In Pakistan, there are no large-scale weather
events like tropical storms; however small-scale occurrences like heavy wind and rain can
quickly disrupt shipping routes. Similarly, traffic jams can be a cause of delivery delays as well.

Although we have no control over traffic or weather patterns, Arif’s management can tend to
influence how they predict and react to these factors. For every logistics operation, if they focus
on only one static, then they are more prone towards inflexibility in their route. This strategy
works out occasionally, but more often than not, we are met by an uncertainty and left in a bind.

As its solution, they should simulate different routes for different orders of kinow containers,
based on several predictions to find optimal fit. When a disruption is anticipated, they should just
do a replanning. We believe this approach is proactive rather than reactive and they could
lessen the effects of weather occurrences that are beyond their control.
