E. Developing mastery 1. Why is it important to know the computer storage devices?

(ANALYSIS 2) 2. How important are the storage devices in every computer?
3. How computer storage devices helps in our daily life?

F. Making generalizations COMPUTER STORAGE

and abstractions about the
lesson (ABSTRACTION) Computer Storage Devices
A computer needs storage devices before and after processing the data to
store information and access later.

Volatile Storage Device – Volatile memory is a type of memory that maintains its
data only while the device is powered. If the power is interrupted for any reason, the
data is lost. Example: RAM
Non-Volatile Storage Device – a storage devices that are used to store and retrieve
data quickly. Nonvolatile storage is physical media that retains data without
electrical power. This means that no data is lost when the computer is powered off,
making hard disks suitable for permanent storage of information.
Examples: hard disk, flash drive, CD, DVD, memory stick, SD card

Primary Storage Device – Typically located inside the computer, primary storage
temporarily houses applications and data currently in use.
Example: Random access memory (RAM), graphic card memory and cache
memory.
Secondary Storage Devices – a memory that is stored external to the computer. It is
mainly used for the permanent and long-term storage of programs and data. It refers
to devices such as hard disk drives, removable “USB” drives, CDs, and DVDs.
examples: hard disk, CD, DVD, flash drive
Computer Storage Devices can be:

1. Fixed Storage Devices – devices that are attached inside the computer unit.

Random Access Memory (RAM)

RAM - Referred to as a primary storage device, this is where the instructions
and results of processing are stored. You must use the save command of the
application to save your work in a secondary device such as a hard disk.
Storage capacity is measured by Gigabytes
(GB).
Example: 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, 8 GB

Hard Disk
Hard disk has a higher capacity
compared to other storage devices.
• It is more durable and expensive.
• More files and software can be stored.
• Storage capacity is measured by Gigabytes (GB) or Terabytes (TB).
Example: 500 GB, 1TB

2. Removable Storage Devices – devices that can be detached after use.

Devices – devices that can be detached after use.

1. Flash Drive, a portable, which means it is

easy for the user to copy and transfer files
From one computer to another computer.

Flash Drive

2. SD Card - electronic storage for your devices

Storing digital media such as photos and videos. A
memory card is one of the most reliable and durable storage
devices, especially when it comes to shock resistance. When you use SD,
Micro SD, Mini SD or any other type of memory card to save photos on your
camera, you can be almost certain that your photos are safe.

2. CD OR DVD - CD – Compact Disc, 700 Megabytes

(MB) in capacity.
• DVD – Digital Video Disc, 4.7 Gigabytes (GB) capacity for single-side, 8.5 GB
for singlesided, double-layer.
• It is good storage for photos, video or data
• The computer must have CD-ROM or DVDROM to access the information.
• You need a DVD Writer device to store your files in blank CD or DVD

3. External Hard Disk - Just like a hard disk, you

can store a lot of information but the only difference
CD or DVD
is that it is detachable and can be transferred to
another computer to access information.

• Storage capacity is measured by Gigabytes (GB)

or Terabytes (TB).

External hard Disk Example: 500 GB, 1TB

3. Cloud Storage – some websites offer free storage to users. They just need to
sign up before they can avail this free storage.
A. Google drive B. Box C. Icloud D. Drop Box C. OneDrive

Other Storage Device

Shared Network Drive – is a location in another computer where other users from
other computers are allowed to save and access information.

G. Finding Practical Direction: Match storage devices in column A to their type of storage in
applications of concepts column B by choosing the correct letter of the correct answer.
and skills in daily living

I. Additional activities for Direction: Research and answer the following questions.
application or remediation 1. What is output Devices?
(ASSIGNMENT) 2. What are the different examples of output devices?
3. What is the difference between input devices and output devices?
