COMPORTMENT

Comportment is the ability to behave oneself in an acceptable manner that will bring respect
and dignity to him/her and society. It is the way an individual behaves or conduct
himself/herself in a particular manner acceptable to the people in the society. It entails rules
and principles or beliefs that bring respect to the individual in the society.

BEHAVIOURS THAT SHOW COMPORTMENT

● Controlling ones temper


● Paying attention in class, church or mosque
● Being patient when confronted with difficult situations
● Urinating or easing oneself at authorized places
● Behaving well during sports and other social gatherings
● Decent dressing
● Showing respect to all people
● Showing good eating habits
● Showing joy and enthusiasm at appropriate places and on right occasions
● Avoiding hooliganism

SITUATIONS WHERE COMPERTMENT MUST BE SHOWN

⮚ We must urinate or ease ourselves at authorized places when the feeling arises
⮚ When we are confronted with difficulty, we must exercise patient
⮚ We must pay at attention to the teacher in class. You must not talk or do unnecessary
things when lesson is in progress
⮚ We must try to control our temper when we are provoked
⮚ We must behave well during sports and other social gatherings. For example, we must
not tease or throw objects like stones at our opponents
⮚ We must tolerate the views of other people
⮚ We must also control our sexual desires in order to avoid rape and other sexual
misconducts
⮚ We must show joy or enthusiasm at appropriate places or occasions. Our jubilation must
not incur other’s displeasure
⮚ One should resort to a more peaceful means of demanding for his/her right

COURTESY
Courtesy is the act of showing good manners, character or behaviour in the community. It is the
ordinary everyday politeness. It is a sign of respect to others.

⮚ Respect for oneself, age group and other people in society


⮚ Assisting the elderly in times of need
⮚ Giving a seat to a pregnant woman or an older person, especially in a bus
⮚ Using polite words in communication; such as ‘please, thank you. Excuse me, sorry’
⮚ Admitting mistakes and rendering apologies
⮚ Learning good eating habit

SITUATIONS NECESSARY FOR COURTESY

⮚ We must use ‘please’ when making a request or asking a question


⮚ When greeting an adult or a chief, you must bow or remove your cap or hat if you have
one on
⮚ When you make a mistake or offend someone you must apologize for it
⮚ We should assist people who need help, for example, an elderly person carrying a load
⮚ It is a sign of respect to obey instructions of our parents, elders and teachers
⮚ Do not interfere in the conversations of adults or your parents when you are not invited
to do so
⮚ Dress decently, eat gently and be polite with people you meet at a function or gathering
whether you know them or not
⮚ In situations where the elderly people have no place to sit either in a bus or during an
occasion, we should offer our seats to them
