RESEARCH PROPOSAL
Introduction
Electricity through the use of the machine has been the primary source of charging the
cellular phone, and it is the only way to make your phone useful. In the province of Masbate, the
consistent electric outage has been the primary problem of the people where businesses and
personal lives are being interrupted. Our group come up with an idea, where should create a
cellular phone that can be charged through the sun’s energy. Nowadays, Solar energy has been
very useful to the people of Masbate because they can easily switch from Masbate Electric
Cooperative (MASELCO) the energy provider of Masbate to Solar Energy, and not only that, the
said alternative power is the only source of certain barangays in Masbate. The very purpose of
such research is to give Masbateṅo people a phone that they can use and charged without relying
on their provider of electricity, so that their lives, businesses and the like will no longer be
interrupted. This study will also benefit those people who love traveling, they wouldn’t worry
about bringing their phone anywhere as long as the sun is shining. The cellular phone is a
primary communication, we should always have our phone charged because it is our weapon
against emergencies.
1. Provide Masbateṅo a Smartphone they can use without relying on their Electricity
provider.
2. Give Convenience, affordable and high-end smartphone with the use of solar Energy.
3. Innovate Masbateṅo to a more reliable smartphone equipped with smart features using
solar power anytime anywhere.
This study will focus on providing a smartphone powered by solar as the main source of
battery power, but with an alternative charging port to be charged on electricity. the researcher
will make sure that the said objective will be met, because some of the machines that we use
nowadays, are also powered by solar energy, and this is also possible for smartphones. We will
be limited for this study to Masbateṅo people, as part of our pre-study, Masbate Province electric
source which is MASELCO could not provide consistent electric power. We will have at least
20% of Masbateṅo as our Participants for this study.
Solar-powered smartphones are cell phones that can charge their batteries in the presence
of sunlight. It is an alternative to the conventional method of using electricity to power cellular
phones, as electricity can be expensive and not always available. With the use of solar energy,
scientific advancements will inevitably lead to this innovative study that will be essential and
helpful to the following:
DEFINITION OF TERMS
MASELCO- Masbate Electric Coop. Inc is an electric cooperative serving the people of
Masbate, duly organized and existing by virtue of Presidential Decree (PD) 269, as amended,
and registered with the NEA.
Masbateṅo- The Masbateño people refers to the people who lived in the Masbate province of the
Philippines, which is part of the Bicol Region. They are part of the wider Visayan ethnolinguistic
group, which constitutes the largest Filipino ethnolinguistic group.
Solar Energy- Solar energy is any type of energy generated by the sun. Solar energy is created by
nuclear fusion that takes place in the sun.
Cellular Phone- A cellular phone is a telecommunication device that uses radio waves over a
networked area (cells) and is served through a cell site or base station at a fixed location,
enabling calls to transmit wirelessly over a wide range, to a fixed landline or via the Internet.
Solar Panel- Solar panels are those devices that are used to absorb the sun's rays and convert
them into electricity or heat.
Smartphone- A smartphone is a cellular telephone with an integrated computer and other features
not originally associated with telephones such as an operating system, web browsing, and the
ability to run software applications.
Electricity- Electricity is a form of energy that can be carried by wires and is used for heating
and lighting, and to provide power for machines.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK
This research is based on the study of Francis Enyi and Florence N. Ifezulike [2012] in
hopes of providing the people of Nigeria with a device or a smartphone that can be energy
efficient through the help of solar energy. As we all know, solar energy, or the light of the sun is
one of the most abundant alternative energy sources we can get from nature, and the study stated
that In Nigeria where the people are blessed with abundant natural resources, including sunlight,
the solar energy should be used for greater productivity. The temperature in Nigeria averages
between 25oC and 28oC annually, using such solar-powered smartphones will be a positive
option in the right direction. During the day, the Smartphone will run on solar power, while at
night, the lithium-ion battery will sustain it till the next daylight. Thereby providing a twenty-
four (24) hours uninterrupted power supply to the Smartphone. Tropical countries such as the
Philippines, and Masbateños will benefit from this study because we have abundant solar energy
sources also, especially during summer. Given the fact that our electricity service provider
(MASELCO) cannot supply sufficient power supply the province’s needs. The researchers
assume that this study will somehow be relevant to the lives of our fellow Masbateños.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
HYPOTHESIS
At the outset of the study, the following hypothesis was put out for consideration. The
solar-powered smartphone has a significant impact on the Masbateño people because of its
usefulness whenever there is a power outage in the province of Masbate. We cannot guarantee
that the solar-powered smartphone study will be able to provide a reasonable price to the
research's beneficiaries due to its unique features, but we can guarantee that a high-quality and
dependable product will be released onto the market.
RESEARCH DESIGN
The study employed an experimental research design since it anticipated that it would be
necessary to learn about the technical aspects of creating a solar-powered smartphone. At the
same time, we used the descriptive-survey method to inform the research's beneficiaries of the
benefits of solar-powered smartphones.
RESPONDENTS
The primary respondents for this study will be individuals who reside in a remote area
without access to electricity and those who are smartphone literate, in particular, respondents
from Brgy. Bugtong, Mandaon, Masbate. We will ask 30% of the people living in the
aforementioned barangay, or those who are at least 18 years old, or we might focus on businesses
and adults who are really in need of alternative smartphones that don't require electricity but
instead rely on solar power to improve communication outside of their boundaries.
PROCEDURE
Conduct a survey with a set of questionnaires to know the experiences of the selected
population of the community in Brgy. Bugtong, Mandaon, Masbate on how their communication
works when the electricity provider does not maintain its power consistently. These surveys may
be handed out online or reached out personally to the selected population and with the help of the
Brgy officials.
STATISTICAL TREATMENT
To know the overall experience of the selected population on how they were dealing with
the frequent power outages of MASELCO that affects their daily communication since their
cellular phones were only relying on electricity as a power source.
