Test Measurement and Evaluation

Important Questions

1. What is a test?

Answer- A test is a tool or questionnaire that is used to measure specific traits or characteristics of an
individual or group. A good test should measure the quality for which it is used to be done. It should be
simple, accurate and easy to use. Example of Test – Thermometer, Weight Measuring Machine,
Stadiometer.

2. What is a measurement?

Answer- Measurement is defined as the value we get every time a test is applied. It is the process of
collecting informations. Measurement is the post test value and is a pre-requisite for evaluation.
Example of Measurement – Distance of shotput or javelin throw, time taken to finish 100m sprint

3. What is evaluation?

Answer- Evaluation is known as worth given to be measurements. The process of physical education
that involves the collection of data from the products which can be used for comparison with
preconceived criteria to make a judgement. Evaluation is always possible only after both test and
measurement are done. Example of evaluation- Overweight, normal blood pressure.

4. What are the importance of test measurement and evaluation?

Answer- The importance of test measurement evaluation are as follows-

• Classification of a sportsperson or athletes

• Selection of a sports person
• Testing of training effects
• individualization of training program
• Motivation of a sports person
• To achieve goals and objective specifically
• To study physical, neuromuscular, interpretive, social and emotional development of sports
person
• To prepare standards or norms
• To compare and evaluate training methods
• To conduct research work

(Explain the above points in 5 marks questions)

5. Describe about the classification of test in physical education and sports in detail?

Answer- Performance in physical education and sports is based on a variety of qualities. To measure
these properties, various types of tests are used. Basically, tests in physical education and sports can be
classified into the following parts-
1. Passive Physical Test
These are the tests in which participants have a passive role in testing procedure. This means
during the testing procedure, participants have to be present but they do not have to do or
perform any activity. Their presence is purely inactive. The following are the examples of passive
physical test
• Measurement of the height of the person. (Stadiometer)
• Measurement of weight weighing scale
( Weighing Scale)
• Measurement of body fat (skinfold caliper)

2. Active Physical Test

Under the category of active physical test, participants play an active role in testing procedure. It
means participants have to perform some activity. In physical education and sports, these
activities can further be divided into two categories. These are as follows:-
• Physical Performance Test
In these type of tests, physical abilities or fitness components are measured. Some of
the examples of these kind of tests are as follows:
▪ 50 m dash test to measure speed
▪ Sit and reach test to measure flexibility
▪ standing broad jump to measure leg power or explosive strength of leg
▪ Dry spirometer to measure lungs capacity

• Sports Performance Test

The sports performance tests include those tests which measure sports ability related to
a specific sport. For example:
▪ To measure football playing ability
following tests are used
McDonald’s soccer skill test
Mitcell-McDonald soccer test
SAI football test

▪ To measure badminton playing ability following tests are used

Lockhart and McPherson Badminton Test
SAI Badminton Skill Test
Miller Wall- Volley Test
▪ To measure Basketball playing ability following tests are used
Johnson Basketball Test
AAHPERD BASKETBALL TEST
SAI Basketball Skill Test

3. Statistical Test
In statistical tests various mathematical formulas are used to analyze information available in
the form of data or numbers. The information available in numerical form is analysed so as to
arrive at a conclusion on the basis of the available information.
4. Written Test
These type of test measures the mental abilities of an individual. On the basis that written tests
are also further divided into two parts. These are:-
• Knowledge Test
Knowledge test includes such tests which assess the knowledge of the participant or a
particular subject. That is, to know how much information the participant has on a
subject.
• Psychological Tests

Psychological test are those tests that measure the personality of the participant. There
are different aspects of our personality. Psychological tests mainly measured the factors
of affective domain which is related to our emotions such as stress anxiety
aggressiveness etc.
6.Calculate the statistical average performance of the batsman who played 10 matches in 1 year and
scored following runs in 10 innings.

83,02,101,35,10,56,45,12,75,91

Answer-

Batsman’s Average Performance=

Total Runs Scored ÷Total innings played

Total Runs = 83+02+101+35+10+56+45+12+75+91=510

Average=510Runs/10matches= 51Runs/match.

7.What are the different types of psychological test?

Answer- The different types of psychological test with quality, name of test, made by and the year are
as follows -

Quality Name of Test Made By

Stress Stress Inventory Millen and Allen (1982)
Anxiety Sports Competition Anxiety Martens (1977)
Test For Children (Scat-C)

Team Spirit and Leadership Sports Leadership Nelson (1966)

Questionnaire
Eating Disorder Eating Disorder Inventory Gamer (1984)

8. Explain the testing guidelines in physical education and sports.

Answer- The purpose of testing that guidelines in physical education and sports is to simplify the
process of testing, reduce the cost of testing, and increase the effectiveness of testing. All these tasks
are involved in this process which is related to the overall system of testing, management,
implementation, supervision and reporting of tests. Whether the test is complex or easy, there are some
important tips and guidelines for conducting an effective test which we can divide into three parts:-
I. Guidelines Before Starting The Testing
o Selection of the test: There may be several tests available to measure a certain
characteristic, e.g. there are several tests available to measure stamina. For example -
Harvard step test, Cooper's 12 min. run/walk test, I mile run/walk test etc.
With the availability of many tests, the first thing to do is to select the most
appropriate test. For this selection, we will keep the following points in mind: -
o Norms/standard of test should be available
o Test should be least expensive.
o Time duration of the test should be less.
o Less people man power should be required to perform the test.
o Testing should require a minimum of equipment and facilities.
Before starting the test, all the necessary papers like scoresheet, card, question paper,
pen, pencil etc. should be prepared.
If more than one test is to be conducted, all the test centers should be prepared and all
testers should be assigned their duties before the commencement of the test.
If there are any instructions for participants, then it should be prepared in written
format in advance.
The entire test procedure also known as the testing manual should be available before the
commencement of the test.
2. Guidelines During The Testing
• to convey the purpose of the examination to all the participants
• explaining the procedure of the test to all participants in detail and
demonstrating the test if necessary
• Providing participants with adequate warm-up and trials in case of active
performance tests.
• Ensuring the confidentiality of the data received from participants.
• To motivate the participants so that they take part in the test sincerely.
• To ensure the safety of all participants during the testing process.
• To complete the test as planned.
3. Guidelines After Completion of Test
• Systematic and organized collection of test records/results so that they can be
forwarded for further processing.
• Analysis of collected results by application of appropriate statistical procedure
and finding the conclusion.
• To prepare the report of the entire sheet
• two state the results and conclusions of the past
• Two state the results and conclusions of the test.
