NATIONAL FAMILY CASE PRESENTATION CONTEST

The National Family Case Presentation Contest is an event of the Philippine Academy of Family
Physicians, Inc. (PAFP) designed to showcase the family physician’s unique approach to care – described as
patient-centered, family-focused and community-oriented – as testimony to the years of growth and
development of the discipline of Family and Community Medicine in the Philippines. Pharex® Health
Corporation, a long-time partner of the PAFP in many of its programs and projects, is the major sponsor of
the contest.

Committee-in-Charge and Implementing Guidelines

1. The FCPC Committee

1.1 The Family Case Presentation Contest (FCPC) sub-committee is an ad hoc committee of the PAFP
Residency Committee designated to oversee the yearly event. The team is in-charge of the mechanics
and criteria of evaluation for the submitted entries. There are at least three members of the
committee, all active members of the PAFP.

2. Mechanics for the Competition

2.1 The contest is open to all PAFP-accredited residency training programs and chapters. Only one (1)
case report shall be accepted as official entry of a training program or chapter.

2.2 Official entries from each chapter or training program shall be evaluated on a regional level. Regional
winners shall automatically be the competitors for the national finals.
2.2.1 Regional Contest
2.2.1.1 Written family case reports are required for screening and evaluation during the
regional competition
2.2.1.2 There shall be one winner for each of the four regions namely: Metro Manila, Luzon,
Visayas and Mindanao. Regional winners will be notified through post mail and via
email, and they will be awarded plaques of recognition.
2.2.2 National Finals
2.2.2.1 An oral presentation based on the written family case report of the regional contest
winner will be an official entry to the National Finals.
2.2.2.2 There shall only be one national champion who will receive a cash prize, plaque and
token from the sponsor.

2.3 All written family case reports must contain the following information:

2.3.1 Clinical discussion of the case of the index patient


2.3.2 Description of the family
2.3.3 Analysis of the family dynamics and impact of illness on the individual and family
2.3.4 Details of family-focused care rendered
2.3.5 Continuing or long-term plans to achieve family wellness

2.3.6 Appropriately-written references using the APA protocol

2.4 Four copies of the manuscript must be submitted using standard A4 size paper. The report must be
typed double-spaced with Arial-font size 11, half-inch paragraph indentations and one-inch margins all
around.

2.5 All entries should be forwarded and officially received at the PAFP Regional or National Offices before
the set deadline. Entries submitted via electronic mail (e-mail) shall be considered valid as long as hard
copies are sent within 2 days. Any entry received past the deadline shall no longer be considered for
the contest. For this year, deadline is set on SEPTEMBER 27, 2019.

3. Mechanics for the National Finals (Oral Presentations):

3.1 The author of the family case report shall present his/her entry at a set date for the National Finals
during the PAFP Annual Convention. It is expected that both presentor and presentation must
demonstrate professionalism.

3.2 Contents of the oral presentation must be based on the submitted final and full written discussion of
the case. No additional information presented on the oral presentation that is NOT included in the
official written report shall be accepted.

3.3 All Finalists are required to be in the PICC Speaker’s Bureau at 11:30 PM on the day of the contest
during the PAFP Annual Convention to meet with the FCPC Committee.

3.4 A copy of the PowerPoint presentation must be saved in a universal serial bus (USB) drive to be
submitted to the FCPC Committee at least 2 hours prior to the actual presentation for review and
compatibility with the official laptop. The author may be given a chance to study his/her slides using
the official laptop for about 15 minutes. This will be on a “first-come, first-served” basis.

3.5 Numbers shall be drawn by the participants to determine the sequence of presentations. During
presentations, the other participants shall be asked to go to a separate holding area to wait for their
turn to present.

3.6 The presentors will be given 15 minutes to deliver his/her presentations. A buzzer will ring and green
light will be flashed to signal the start of the presentation. A buzzer with yellow light will ring to signal
the last five minutes for the presentation. A buzzer with red light will ring to signal the end of the
presentation.

3.7 The presentors will be asked questions by the judges after the presentation for a duration of five
minutes. Answers to questions must be satisfactory, clear, and concise.

4. Board of Judges

4.1 Sets of three family physicians shall comprise the Panel of Judges for the regional and the national
competition. Chairs of residency programs as well as Residency Training Officers shall not be invited
as judges. Faculty members may however be invited but not to judge papers from the same region.

4.2 Each panel of judges shall consist of three (3) Family Physicians who are AT LEAST PAFP Diplomates.

4.3 Invited judges from Metro Manila and Luzon will be evaluating entries from Visayas and Mindanao,
respectively and vice-versa for the regional competition.

4.4 Evaluation of the written and oral family case reports and presentations shall be made using a pre-
determined set of criteria. The decision of the judges shall be final and binding.

4.5 All judges shall receive an honorarium and PAFP Certificates of Appreciation.

5. Family Case reports

5.1 All submitted entries to the contest shall become properties of the PAFP.

5.2 All winning entries – regional and national – shall submit their family case reports in publishable
format using the instructions to authors of The Filipino Family Physician journal as guide. Titles must
be modified and made more scientific if chosen for publication.

5.3 All winning entries shall undergo peer review for possible publication in The Filipino Family Physician
journal.

5.4 Authorship will remain with the original author of the family case report.

6. Criteria for Judging the written case report

6.1 The criteria that will be used by the judges have been approved by the PAFP Board.

6.2 The criteria for the regional contest will differ from the national only in style and format since the
former will be presented in written format whereas the latter will be orally presented.
