8.1 Details about Touch 'n Go

Touch 'n Go is Malaysia's first contactless smart card and electronic payment system
based on a contactless smart card. Meanwhile, it is the founder of Malaysia's start-
up Visa Wave and MasterCard PayPass credit cards. It can also be used in tandem
with SmartTAG, an extra in-vehicle drive-directly electronic payment instrument and
system. Furthermore, the company is the national credit card-sized electronic wallet
for the transportation industry, and it can be used wherever that displays the Touch
'n Go logo. The Malaysian government pioneered the introduction of an integrated
electronic payment system and a single ticket system for the payment of highway
tolls, public transportation fares, parking fees, and theme park entrance fees. Touch
'n Go was first introduced in March 1997.

Teras Teknologi Sdn Bhd created the Touch 'n Go cards and systems totally with
MIFARE technology, the world's premier touchless smart card technology.
Rangkaian Segar Sdn Bhd distributes it to the general public. The Touch 'n Go
scanner is made by Cipher Tec (M) Sdn Bhd, a Malaysian company based in
Subang, Selangor, Malaysia. Touch' n Go is a technique that uses a touchless smart
card to create an electronic payment system. MIFARE is a radio frequency
communication technology that allows data to be transmitted between a contactless
smart card and a scanner. When a Touch 'n Go card is swiped on a scanner for
payment or topping up, it is considered a transaction. Rangkaian Segar Sdn Bhd
introduced a new Touch' n Go card in 2005 to replace all of the old Touch' n Go
cards with the newest security features such as security key updates on smart card
chips.

On March 18, 1997, Touch 'n Go was formally inaugurated at the Jalan Pahang Toll
Plaza and the Jalan Cheras Toll Plaza. The same services were thereafter made
available at the Salak Toll Plaza and the Bandar Tun Razak Toll Plaza on April 15,
1997. On 15 November 1998, the operator of the North-South Expressway, PLUS
Expressways Berhad, introduced the facility to all 65 toll plazas along the 848-
kilometer highway operated by the company, bringing Touch 'n Go to the public's
notice for the first time.
