Introduction

In daily life, the water is very important for all life. Water is a chemical that is in
liquid form at normal pressure and at room temperature. Water covers 70% of the earth’s
surface. Every life on this earth needs water to survive. Water can also exist in 3 forms
namely liquid, gas and solid in different quantities.

In our study entitled cohesive and adhesive properties of water (surface water).
Cohesive is a attraction between the molecules in a mass and the adhesive is a something
sticky that holds things together. In our experiment, we will use tap water, penny, plastic
pipette, paperclip, binder clip and toothpick to determinate the maximum number of the water
drop on penny’s surface. Besides, we will investigate the effect of cohesion and adhesion that
happen in the experiment and detect the similar reaction of the experiment with surrounding.
Objective :

1. Determine the maximum number of the water drop on penny’s surface.

2. Investigate the effect of cohesion and adhesion that happen in the experiment.
3. Detect the similar reaction of the experiment with surrounding.

DISCUSSION

There are two properties at work in this experiment which are cohesion and surface tension.
Cohesion is the attraction of like molecules to one another. In this experiment, the molecules
are the H20 molecules in the water drops. Surface tension is a special term we use to describe
the cohesion between water molecules.

Water’s cohesion and surface tension are special because of hydrogen bonds. Hydrogen
bonds are formed by the hydrogen atoms of one molecule being attracted to the oxygen atoms
of another molecule.

The cohesion and surface tension of water becomes apparent when the drops of water you
add to the penny reach the penny’s edge. Once the water has reached the edge, you begin to
see a bubble or dome of water forming on top of the penny. The bubble shape is a result of
the water molecules clinging to one another in an optimal shape

Procedure

1. Predicting on how many drops of water will fit on a penny.

2. Use the plastic pipette to drop water on the surface of a penny. Drop carefully and slowly
to fit as many drops as possible on the penny. Count each drop until the water spills over the
side of the penny and record.

3. Compare results with the people in group. The range and calculation of the average
number drops that fit on a penny recorded from the people in group

4. Add more drops to the penny, without letting the water spill over. Carefully observe and
draw the water on the penny in report..

5. Invent and record a hypothesis for the behavior of water that observed, using the language
of cohesion and adhesion in relation to the water and the penny.
