SPUDCAN PENETRATION ANALYSIS
SFNY PHASE 2, SAFANIYA FIELD, ARABIAN GULF, OFFSHORE SAUDI ARABIA

PROJECT INFORMATION Safaniya Oil Field is located offshore Saudi Arabia. It is undergoing
McDermott Middle East, Inc. expansion and upgrade under the Safaniya Master Plan initiated
Fugro (U.A.E) by Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Aramco). McDermott was awarded
2015 the Phase 2 development project involving the upgrade of existing
well heads and installing artificial lift infrastructure.
SERVICES PROVIDED
Geophysical Survey Fugro was contracted by McDermott to provide geophysical survey
■ Obtain Positioning and Navigation data using DGPS and the in association with site clearance for the rig-move and geotechnical
Fugro Starfix Seis navigation package. consultancy for spudcan penetration analysis.
■ Obtain seabed imagery using side scan sonar to identify the
seabed features and obstacles. Spudcan penetration analysis was performed based on information
from existing/historic borehole logs provided by the Client and
Geotechnical Consultancy Services complimented by the new geophysical results.
■ Modelling of the soil profile for spudcan penetration analysis
based on the provided geotechnical data. Figure 2 presents selected locations with spudcan penetration
■ Selection of soil parameters for spudcan penetration analysis. analysis was conducted by Fugro for the Safaniyah Phase 2 project.
■ Modelling of jack-up foundation. Seabed features such as spudcan & seabed depressions, existing
■ Assessment of spudcan penetration in seabed based on pipelines in the vicinity and other seabed anomalies were identified.
SNAME (2008) guidelines. Ground conditions such as soft seabed, dense over loose sand,
■ Assessment of punch through risk and identification of stiff over soft clay, cemented layers, carbonate soils etc. were also
geohazards associated with scour and unfavourable seabed encountered. Further, significant geotechnical data were available
features. from historic reports with limited/ low resolution information. Fugro’s
expertise in spudcan penetration analysis and experience with the
Safaniyah field was used with advantageously to obtain accurate
predictions for the spudcan penetration.
