CHAPTER V
SITE SURVEY
A reconnaissance survey of the site has been done by study team to be familiarized with
the nature and condition of the site. The study team of consultant and the representatives
from the client together visited the site to carry out initial assessment and survey work
regarding the site boundary, to understand prevailing site conditions and to familiarize
with the site.
In order to carry out initial assessment and survey work, members of the study team
comprising Er ManojkumarChaudhary, Er Sikinder Kumar Chaudhary and Sushil
Karanjit visited the site on April 2013.
To better understand the project, the meeting was conducted in coordination with
concerned representatives including Siyaram Prasad Singh (General Manager, DDC lain
chaur, lalitpur) at the premises of DDC office building on April 2013. During the
meeting, discussions regarding the general requirements were made.

At this stage of inception phase, detailed topographical survey was not conducted in
present situation as the fixed boundary of the site was unavailable and also the water
logged within the site obstructed from the detailed survey works. However, digital
Landuse Map of municipalities of Kathmandu valleyand Google Satellite Map of January
2010 were overlaid together and taken as reference to understand the terrain of the site.
For the soil feature study, at present, a cursory observation and desk study of the site was
done. As per the “Geological Map of Kathmandu valley” prepared by Department of
Mines and Geology, the project site lies in Kalimati Formation (Klm). The Kalimati
formation is characterized as “Grey to dark silty clay and clayey silt, at places calcareous

nature and phosphate mineral (vivianite) organic clay, fine sand beds and peat layers
common; occasionally lignite seams up to 2 m. Total thickness up to 450 m or more”1
As per the site condition and local geology, rotary/percussion drilling would be an
appropriate instrument to carry out the drilling work. To achieve 100 mm diameter
samples at deeper depth, percussion drilling is more convenient to rotary drilling.
Standard Penetration test at an interval of 1.5 meter starting from 1.50meter from the
original ground level would reveal the density and consistency of sub soil on which
foundation will rest. Collection of disturbed and undisturbed samples from each borehole
at the salient depth would help us to develop the soil profile and predict the soil
parameters for allowable bearing capacity of soil.
Since the depth of boring should be not less than one and half (1.5) times the smaller
dimension of the structure (IS 1892-1979), it is recommended to split the tower portion
with the gallery and other basement portion.
*Detailed soil report shall be provided during draft phase.
