II. SOCIOLOGY
The self as a product of the relationship with the society
2
“
Sociology is the study of how human
society is established, its structure,
how it works, the people’s interaction
and the effects they have for one
another
3
THE SELF IN SOCIOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE
◈ The self is socially constructed in the sense that
it is shaped through interaction with other
people
◈ As with socialization in general, the individual is
not a passive participant in this process and have
a powerful influence over how this process and
its consequences develop

Activity Processing: The Looking Glass Self
• How do you find the activity? was it
easy? was it hard? Why?
• What aspects are similar, which is
not?
• What aspects are true or
circumstantial?
• Are there characteristics
mentioned/described by others that
you realized you are not aware of?
• From the perspectives of others, is it
aligned with how you wish others
sees you?

The Looking Glass Self (Charles Horton Cooley)
◈ A person’s self grows
out of a person´s
social interactions
with others
◈ The view of ourselves
comes from the
contemplation of
personal qualities and
impressions of how
others perceive us
6
The Looking Glass Self (Charles Horton Cooley)
◈ Actually, how we see ourselves does not come from who
we really are, but rather from how we believe others see
us

Think of a time
were you feel you
were your true
self?
11
Can you provide a
time where you
think you were not
living your true
self? What was it?
12
What social
pressures/influences
help shape your
self?
13
Reflecting on who you
are now, is there an
aspect of your self
that you want to
change?
