AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

The author was born on October 28, 1996 at Kayapa Proper, Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya. She

is the third among the four siblings of Mr. Berto Cosep- Lamsis (+) and Mrs. Martina Libuatan-

Lamsis. The family lives at Kayapa Proper, Kayapa, Nueva Vizcaya.

She finished her elementary education at Kayapa Proper Elementary School in 2009.

While her secondary education at Martinez Cuyangan National High School (MCNHS) in the

year of 2013. After her graduation, she works at Santa Fe, Nueva Vizcaya as a baby sitter

because of lack of money and also to help her parents because her father was diagnosed with a

complicated illness and a cancer. After a few months, her father passed away while she is not in

her father’s side. This is one of the biggest heart break in her life, losing a father is very hard to

accept. Despite of these struggles in their life she continued her study the following year by the

help of her mother and her relatives.

She enrolled at Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) Bayombong Campus and took

up Bachelor of Science in Fisheries starting from June, 2014 up to the present. During her

college years, she stayed at the Ladies Dormitory of Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) for

three (3) years. Staying in a dormitory for more than 3 years is fun and exciting especially when

you know how to socialized with other boarders. College life is far from her high school years

where she is living happy go lucky. There are a lot of things that is needed to do in order to pass

in every subject.

I.BACKGROUND OF THE FIELD PRACTICE STATION

Location and Description of the place of the station:

The La Trinidad Fish Farm (LTFF) is located within the Benguet State University (BSU)

compound Balili, La Trinidad, which is about (3km) north of Baguio City and is approximately

256 km from of Manila. The station is situated at an elevation of 4,700 feet above sea level that

is why it has temperature climate. La Trinidad is bounded on the north by the Municipality of

Tublay on the south by Baguio city, and west by Sablan and Tuba. The LTFF can be reached

within 10-15 minutes from the Department of Agriculture Regional office based on Guiasad.

History of the station:

The LTFF was constructed in 1971 by then Philippine Fisheries Commission (FPC),

under Region 1, now Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). Its existence has been

entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the FPC with the Commissioner

Andres Mane and Mountain State Agricultural College (MSAC), now Benguet State University

(BSU) with its President Bruno Santos, and duly approved by Mr. Arturo P. Tanco, Jr –former

Secretary of Agriculture and Natural Resources – now Department of Agriculture (DA).

The LTFF has a total land area of more or less 30,000 sq. m hectares including its

mountain slope, a serviceable/productive area of 8664 sq. m hectares and the remaining 13,000

sq. m hectares are for infrastructure purposes.

The concept of recreating the center as a regional training institute for fisheries gives

emphasis of development on aquaculture and need to develop competent aquaculture extension

workers, and became the only regional facility for fresh water aquaculture in the Cordilleras.
Favorably, fisheries industry especially the aquaculture sector favorably gained popularity

in the region resulting to increase the demand for quality fingerlings. The station was then forced

to concentrate its operation only on fingerling production as primary need of the aquaculture

adaptors un the region. Grow-out of marketable size in the station did not take place due to this

reason.

Moreover, at least two compartments each with an area of approximately sq. m are set

aside for the conduct of research trials of the students of Benguet State University. As

complement, the BFAR-CAR accommodates students from different academes especially from

BSU to perform their hands-on-training on aquaculture specifically on hatchery management

practices under upland condition. This enhance the knowledge and skill of the students and gain

experiences in the field of aquaculture. The said compartment was also maintained by the

BFAR-CAR in terms of security production and cleanliness.

In 1989, after the creation of the Cordillera Administrative Region in 1987 through

Executive Order No. 220 issued by President Corazon Aquino, the LTFF was renamed La

Trinidad Regional Fish Farm (LTRFF)

Purposes of the station:

LTRFF became the only fish seed propagation center operating in the Highland Cordillera

under the Department of Agriculture (DA). Its main function focuses on the production of carp

and tilapia fingerlings of technologically superior breed for dispersal and research purposes. In

2015, it was able to produce 4,420,000 pieces of tilapia and 2 897,000 pieces of carp. On
December 2015, there are 1000 male tilapia breeders, and 3000 female tilapia breeders with a

total of 5,210 breeders maintained.

It was also stipulated in the MOA that: a model set up of a pilot freshwater fish nursery

(LTFF) established within the reservation shall be open for observation to generate fish industry

in the Mountain provinces and other neighboring provinces. To support this purpose, BFAR-

CAR continues to improve the station to provide an excellent showcase of Cordillera fisheries to

visitors and by-passers with limited knowledge and information on fisheries activities in a land-

locked region. The station also welcomes educational trips and conducts orientation activities to

give a general view on fisheries and aquaculture sector.

Organization and management of the station:

Initially, the farm was managed by the first Farm Manager, Mr. Gualberto Soratos with 9

farm workers. In 2012 to present the farm is managed by OIC-Farm Manager Marx Perfecto C.

Garcia, Aquaculturist II, with seven (7) Job Order staff composed of two technical staff namely

Martha Estima and Allan Dela Cruz, farm laborers namely Rafael Bulakit, Wilner Bumal-o and

John Pagui-en and staff Jean Denna, Utility worker, and Alberto Dosdos, Driver.

In 2014 and 2015 respectively, Ms. Denna and Mr. Pagui-en resigned and were replaced

by Mr. Edmund Mapili and Mr. Jay-ar Lobas. In the same year, Ms. Martha was assigned to

Mountain Province Fishery Office in favor of permanent employment. And Mr. Regino

Doctolero II is assigned at the Loach Hatchery, he is Aquaculturist 1-FPD.

Facilities of the station:

To make quality services possible, the farm maintains facilities which include two

buildings the Training Center and Guest House (30 pax capacity); and the Staff quarters

including the concrete breeding and hatching tanks. It has a concrete elevated water tank

reservoir that supplies water to the tanks which is one of the rehabilitation work introduced to

upgrade said farm.

The pond system is composed of 16 units of nursery ponds and dikes lining and 11 rearing

ponds. The water supply comes from a natural spring during the rainy days and from deep well

where the water is pumped out during the dry season.

Species Cultured:

There are two main species produced in the farm include tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus

and Common carp, Cyprinus carpio. Its accessibility to the other municipalities of Benguet,

Mountain Province, Ifugao and Abra made the farm as a supplementary source pf fish seed.

Some other neighboring provinces outside Cordillera such as La Union, Pangasinan and Ilocos

Sur are also benefiting from the fingerlings produced by the station. Today they add the loach,

Misgurnus angullicaudatus as one of the species cultured at LTRFF. Wherein they are

conducting Induce spawning in order to produce fry easily.
