The La Trinidad Fish Farm (LTFF) is located within the Benguet State University (BSU)
compound Balili, La Trinidad, which is about (3km) north of Baguio City and is approximately
256 km from of Manila. The station is situated at an elevation of 4,700 feet above sea level that
is why it has temperature climate. La Trinidad is bounded on the north by the Municipality of
Tublay on the south by Baguio city, and west by Sablan and Tuba. The LTFF can be reached
within 10-15 minutes from the Department of Agriculture Regional office based on Guiasad.
The LTFF was constructed in 1971 by then Philippine Fisheries Commission (FPC),
under Region 1, now Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR). Its existence has been
entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the FPC with the Commissioner
Andres Mane and Mountain State Agricultural College (MSAC), now Benguet State University
(BSU) with its President Bruno Santos, and duly approved by Mr. Arturo P. Tanco, Jr –former
The LTFF has a total land area of more or less 30,000 sq. m hectares including its

The concept of recreating the center as a regional training institute for fisheries gives
workers, and became the only regional facility for fresh water aquaculture in the Cordilleras.
Favorably, fisheries industry especially the aquaculture sector favorably gained popularity
in the region resulting to increase the demand for quality fingerlings. The station was then forced
to concentrate its operation only on fingerling production as primary need of the aquaculture
adaptors un the region. Grow-out of marketable size in the station did not take place due to this
reason.
Moreover, at least two compartments each with an area of approximately sq. m are set
aside for the conduct of research trials of the students of Benguet State University. As
complement, the BFAR-CAR accommodates students from different academes especially from
practices under upland condition. This enhance the knowledge and skill of the students and gain
experiences in the field of aquaculture. The said compartment was also maintained by the

LTRFF became the only fish seed propagation center operating in the Highland Cordillera
under the Department of Agriculture (DA). Its main function focuses on the production of carp
and tilapia fingerlings of technologically superior breed for dispersal and research purposes. In
2015, it was able to produce 4,420,000 pieces of tilapia and 2 897,000 pieces of carp. On
December 2015, there are 1000 male tilapia breeders, and 3000 female tilapia breeders with a
It was also stipulated in the MOA that: a model set up of a pilot freshwater fish nursery
(LTFF) established within the reservation shall be open for observation to generate fish industry
in the Mountain provinces and other neighboring provinces. To support this purpose, BFAR-
CAR continues to improve the station to provide an excellent showcase of Cordillera fisheries to
visitors and by-passers with limited knowledge and information on fisheries activities in a land-
locked region. The station also welcomes educational trips and conducts orientation activities to

To make quality services possible, the farm maintains facilities which include two

Species Cultured:
There are two main species produced in the farm include tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus
and Common carp, Cyprinus carpio. Its accessibility to the other municipalities of Benguet,
Mountain Province, Ifugao and Abra made the farm as a supplementary source pf fish seed.
Some other neighboring provinces outside Cordillera such as La Union, Pangasinan and Ilocos
