Activity 4: Poem Interpretation

Directions: Read and analyze the poem entitled “The Negro Mother” by Langston Hughes.
Interpret the poem and be guided by the following questions enumerated below. Your written
output will be scored against the following criteria: Breadth and depth of interpretation-20,
Organization of thoughts-10 and Language Facility-10. (40 points)
The one who is talking in the poem is Africa, represented by the negro mother, who wants to
implicate the oppression or cruelty she went through under the colonizers. The poem is
particularly addressing to the children of Africa, which is asking them to remember and value the
sacrifices their motherland has done, by living the life that was deprived from them before. The
freedom, rights, and integrity that was forbidden before, take it and live differently.
