Learning Area: Practical Research 1 Semester: FIRST

I. OBJECTIVES:

A. Content Standard

The learner demonstrates understanding of (1) the importance of research in daily life, (2) the characteristics,
processes, and ethics of research, (3) quantitative and qualitative research & (4) the kinds of research across
fields.

B. Performance Standard
The learner is able to use appropriate kinds of research in making decisions.

C. Learning Competency

The learner differentiates quantitative from qualitative research.

D. Learning Competency Code

CS_RS11-IIIa-4

II. CONTENT: QUALITATIVE vs. QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

III.LEARNING RESOURCES:

A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide Workshop on Research Methodology by Sudhir Gupta
2. Learner’s Material
3. Additional Materials

B. Other Learning Resources Practical Research 2 by Chin Uy et al

IV. PROCEDURES:

A. Review
How taxing is a research endeavor?

B. Motivation
Which research design is applicable to each situation? Quantitative or qualitative?
 In a study of presidentiables for 2016 election in the Philippines, an interview of the candidates was
conducted to compare their platforms of governance and personal qualifications.
 A comparative study was made on the presidential race poll surveys over the last quarter of the
campaign period to influence the public whom to vote best.

C. Presentation
At this hour, we will spend time together differentiating qualitative from quantitative research.

D. Exemplification
Note the following scenarios:
Scene 1
 In a study of presidentiables for 2016 election in the Philippines, an interview of the candidates was
conducted to compare their platforms of governance and personal qualifications.

Scene 2
 A comparative study was made on the presidential race poll surveys over the last quarter of the
campaign period to influence the public whom to vote best.

E. Lesson Proper/Discussion

Scene 1
 In a study of presidentiables for 2016 election in the Philippines, an interview of the candidates was
conducted to compare their platforms of governance and personal qualifications.

 What research design is best applied for Situation 1?

 Unsay mga words sa Situation 1 nga naghatag ug hint aron makasulti ka nga it belongs to a certain
research design?

 It is qualitative research because the method of inquiry is interview.

 It aims to produce information on a specific case (e.g. comparison of platforms of
governance and personal qualifications among candidates)
 Words such as interview of the candidates, personal qualifications

Scene 2
 A comparative study was made on the presidential race poll surveys over the last quarter of the
campaign period to influence the public whom to vote best.

 What made Situation 2 a quantitative research?

 Unsay mga words sa Situation 2 nga naghatag ug hint aron makasulti ka that it belongs to a certain
research design?

 It is quantitative research because the method of inquiry is through survey.

 The data collected come from a large sample of the population.
 Words such as poll surveys, public

One point of difference is the type of interview to be conducted both for qualitative (QLRD) and
quantitative research designs (QTRD).
Why do you think QLRD uses unstructured interview while QTRD maximizes the structured interview?
Unsa man di ay ang mga qualities sa usa ka unstructured interview? Maunsa man ang
interview kung structured?

F. Drill/Exercise
As to data collection, differentiate quantitative research from qualitative research.

G. Application
 How important is the research design in doing a certain research work?

H. Generalization & Abstraction

 Qualitative research studies a phenomenon in its natural setting.
 Quantitative research validates relationship to generalize.
 Other points of differences may be based on decision makings, sample size, data collection and type
of data to be collected as well as type of interviews to be done.

I. Evaluation
Differentiate the following scenarios as to qualitative or quantitative. Support your claims.

1. Recruitment strategies of student athletes among coaches in MONHS.

2. Thoughts of Grade 12 Students on difficulties encountered in Practical Research 1.
