1) Activity 3: Skill-building Activities (with answer key) (18 mins + 2 mins checking)

Exercise. Identify the following:

1. It is considered the heart of your HVAC system; this sits out on the back or side of
your home. It is packed with refrigerant gas and linked to the evaporator coil. When the refrigerant cools into
a liquid by heat exchange with the outdoor air, the condenser unit sends it to the evaporator coil to vaporize it
into gas again.

2. It is designed to add thermal energy to a space or building in order to maintain some selected
air temperature that would otherwise not be achieved due to heat flows (heat loss) to the exterior environment.

3. It is a narrow tube, made from a heat- and cold-resistant metal, bring the refrigerant
to the condensing unit in gas form and send it back into the evaporator coil in liquid form.

4. It is a device that triggers the heat exchanger or evaporator coil-condensing unit to

disperse warm or cool air as necessary. You can either program it in advance or adjust it manually to maintain
your preferred indoor temperature.

5. It is an acronym that stands for “heating, ventilating and air-conditioning” and generally
includes a variety of active mechanical/electrical systems employed to provide thermal control in buildings. Control of the
thermal environment is a key objective for virtually all occupied buildings.

6. This comprises a system of ducts that carry treated air from the HVAC system to
various areas of your home. Most ducts are made of aluminum, but they can also be constructed from plastic,
steel or fiberglass.

7. It is one of the major components of your HVAC system. Its purpose is to produce
heated air, which will be circulated in the entire home. Depending on the model, it may use any of the four
different heat sources: combustion, heat pump, electric resistance or solar energy.

8. This will operate in contrast to the heat exchanger. It cools the air during summer.
You can locate this in a metal enclosure on the furnace’s exterior.

9. It is intended to introduce air to or remove air from a space -- to move air without changing its
temperature. Ventilating systems may be used to improve indoor air quality or to improve thermal comfort.

10. These are rectangular outlets that deliver the heated or cooled air from the ducts into
every room of your home. They are located on or near the ceiling and they direct air downward. They can be
manually controlled to control heating or cooling in the room.
