1. CREATE A RESEARCH PLAN


Part 1 of the Library Session (password: Research Methods) reviews what we covered in class.
a. Type out your preliminary topic and put (parentheses) around the core concepts (the 2-3 words that clearly
describe your topic):
Example: How do (young) (voters) view (political campaigns) in (social media)?

How does (Disney) represent the concept of (love) throughout its (animated films)?

b. Find synonyms for each of these concepts, where possible:

c. Truncate (i.e. find the root words or parts of words for) your synonyms where possible. Group words with
similar root spellings together and add the truncation symbol (*) to the end of each truncated word:

d. Use Boolean Operators (And, Or, Not) and Nesting (multiple textboxes) to combine both your truncated
synonyms and any synonyms that could not be truncated to create a search phrase. Use parentheses to
represent your text boxes.

2. FIND TWO SCHOLARLY FULL-TEXT ARTICLES IN THE EBSCO OR JSTOR DATABASES

a. Go to the Library website (http://www.marianopolis.edu/Library/).
b. Click on Find journal and newspaper articles.
c. Scroll down to the link to the EBSCO databases or the JSTOR database; click on one of them and log in.
d. If using EBSCO:
a. Click on Journal Databases.
b. Check off Academic Search Premier and/or Social Sciences Full Text (H.W. Wilson) and/or Business
Source Elite and/or PsycARTICLES and/or Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection and/or
SocINDEX and/or ERIC and/or Education Source, as appropriate for your topic.
c. Click the Continue button.
d. Check off the Full-Text and Peer-Reviewed checkboxes.
e. Select SU Subject Terms from the drop-down box.
If using JSTOR:
a. Click on Advanced Search.
b. Check off the Articles checkbox under Item Type
c. Sometimes selecting “Abstract” from the search drop-down box can help focus your search, although
only 10% of JSTOR articles have abstracts, which will limit your pool of possible results.
e. Using the search phrase you constructed in Question 1 as a starting point, find two full-text articles from
scholarly journals that relates to your topic.
Note: In order to get the most out of the databases, you may need to alter your search phrase as you search.

3. FIND A SCHOLARLY FULL-TEXT ARTICLE BY A KEY AUTHOR IN THE EBSCO OR JSTOR

Part 3 of the Library Session (password: Research Methods) reviews what we covered in class.
a. Take a look at the articles that you found in Question 2. Note the authors of the articles and the references at
the end of the articles.
b. To find a third scholarly full-text article on your topic in the EBSCO or JSTOR databases, you have 2 options:

1. Select one of the authors of one of the articles that you selected in Question 2.
OR

2. Select one of the authors found in the references of one of the articles that you selected in Question 2.

c. Go to the EBSCO Search or the JSTOR Advanced Search.


d. If using EBSCO:
a. Check off the Full-Text and Peer-Reviewed checkboxes.
b. Select AU Author from the drop-down box.
e. If using JSTOR:
a. Click on Advanced Search.
b. Check off the Articles checkbox under Item Type
c. Select Author from the drop-down box beside the search box.
f. Enter your selected author’s name in the search box to find a third scholarly full-text article from scholarly
journals that relates to your topic.
g. Repeat as needed with different authors until you find an article that relates to your topic.

a. Go to the Library website (http://www.marianopolis.edu/Library/).
b. Click on Search the Library Catalogue.
c. Click on Advanced Search.
d. Under Type, select “E-book.”
e. Use your search phrase you constructed in Question 1 to find a book on your topic. Select an eBook on your
topic
f. The book can either be specifically about your topic, or it can be a broader text that covers the general discipline
of your topic.
Note: When searching the Library catalogue, you must use a “$” instead of an “*” as a truncation symbol.
