ABSTRACT

This study investigated the social media and academic


performances of secondary school students in owerri North
Local Government Area of Imo state. Research design of the
study is a descriptive survey. Five (5) research questions were
formulated by the researcher. The researcher adopted
purposively random sampling technique in selecting the
respondent for the study .The sample represents 30% 0f the
population which is a sample of 240 respondents. Instrument
for data collection was through the use of questionnaire
tagged: Social media and Academic Performance of students
(SMAPSQ). The data presented were analyzed using
percentages, mean scores and standard deviation. It was
observed that social media affects student’s academic
performance to a very extent; students make use of social
media very often, social media affects the study time of
students. Based on the findings, recommendations were made
by researcher. One of them was that the teachers or lecturers
should use social media for educational purposes.
