DETERMINE THE CAPACITY AND COP OF VAPOUR ABSORPTION

REFRIGERATOR TEST RIG
AIM
 Determine the capacity and COP of vapour absorption refrigerator test rig
APPARATUS REQUIRED
 Vapour absorption refrigerator test rig
PROCEDURE
1. Now we are going to see about practical vapour absorption refrigeration
system.
2. The components of a practical vapour absorption refrigeration system are,
3. Condenser
4. Expansion valve
5. Evaporator
6. Absorber
7. Pump
8. Generator
9. Rectifier
10.Heat exchanger
11.Analyser
12.Throttling Valve
13.In the condenser, ammonia vapour gets condensed by rejecting its heat to the
surrounding cooling medium.
14.Liquid ammonia enters the expansion valve through the heat exchanger.
15.In the expansion valve, expansion takes place, and low-pressure liquid
ammonia enters the evaporator.
16.In the evaporator, liquid ammonia absorbs heat from the products and
converts them into vapour.
17.The products are cooled in the evaporator.
18.Low-pressure vapour refrigerant from the evaporator enters the absorber.
19.In the absorber, ammonia is absorbed by water and is dissolved in the water.
20.This strong solution of ammonia is pumped into the generator with the help of
a pump.
21. In the generator, a strong solution of ammonia is heated by an external
source.
22. High-pressure and high-temperature ammonia vapour is separated from
water and enters the analyzer.
23.While hot ammonia vapors flow upwards, vapour containing moisture gets
dehydrated and dropped into the generator.
24.The dehydrated ammonia vapours enter the rectifiers, where the remaining
water particles will be separated.
25.Ammonia vapour enters the condenser.
26.Thus, the cycle is repeated.
27.VAR test rig comprises of
28.Main switch
29.Temperature indicator
30.Temperature sensor switch
31.Digital volt meter and ammeter
32.Evaporator (chiller)
33.Thermocouple
34.Condenser cum separator
35.In the VAR system, there is no compressor and pump.
36.The operation of this system is based on the concept of Dalton's law.
37.The pressure in the system is the same everywhere.
38.The system components are located such that flow is mainlined by gravity.
39.In addition to gravity, the system uses the principle of a bubble pump.
40.Before starting the test rig, check all the systems, such as the power supply
and accessories.
41.Fill the evaporator box (inside the cabinet) with a measured quantity of water
using a measuring jar (approximately 300 ml).
42.Switch on the supply to the trainer.
43.Check all the temperatures.
44.Let the system run for some time (1 hour approx.) (till the temperature in the
evaporator box is obtaining steady conditions).
45.During observation, do not open the evaporator.
46.Now note down the readings.
47.Now the unit is switched OFF.
48.From the observed values using formulae, find out the Theoretical COP
49.Before substituting, convert the temperature Celsius to Kelvin
50.Refrigeration effect
51.Power input
52.Actual COP
53.The capacity of the system
