Life and Works of Rizal

Dr. Jose Rizal, our national hero, fought for freedom for our country with his pen. He was known
for writing novels, poems, and essays like his famous novel books "Noli Me Tangere" and "El
Filibusterismo." I remembered his life when I was studying in elementary and high school. On June 19,
1861, he was born in Calamba, here in our province of Laguna, and received his first education in Binan.
Later in life, he attended the Ateneo Municipal de Manila, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts, and
continued his education degree in Madrid, Spain, where he began writing Noli Me Tangere. And when I
was Grade 9, we studied this book Noli Me Tangere each chapter by reporting each one of us in a class. I
learned from this book that how was the terror and cruelty of Spanish government in our country. You
can’t speak against the friar and to the church because they are so powerful and they have a political
authority. That is why there is no separation between church and state on that time. They slaved too
much our local Filipinos who called them indios.

I was expecting in this class here in GE 9 that I wanted to learn more about the life and works of
Rizal during his early years, education, and later years of life. And more about our history during Spanish
colonization and their governance.
