1. Introduction
In order to ensure uniform quality of valve positioner commissioning from all licensees and improve
spare part compatibility in service this guide should be used whenever a Siemens SIPART PS2
valve positioner is commissioned.

The Siemens SIPART PS2 positioner can be applied to engines in order to ensure safe and reliable
control of valves in EGB, EGR, WHR or SCR systems.

Important! The positioner must be mounted on a stable foundation with minimum vibration,
shielded from heat, with good access and preferably in a position where it is pos-
sible to see the valve it controls, in one of the following ways:

MDT strongly recommends not to use the “Flexible Support” for the Exhaust Gas Receiver as
mounting base for the SIPART.

To ensure correct functionality the positioner (Type 6DR5011-0NG00-0AA0) needs an input of 4-20
mA, an output of 4-20 mA, working air pressure below 8.4 bar.

Valve position feedback is facilitated by the Positioner Feedback Magnet (Type A5E000524070)
and the Positioner Feedback Pickup NCS sensor (Type 6DR4004-8NN40) mounted on a TGX
mounting bracket (Type 16300-149).

4.2. On the Valve Actuator

Caution! Whenever magnet position is adjusted air supply must be cut off. This is both due
to the safety aspect of sudden valve actuation during manual adjustment and it is
the only certain way to find out whether the valve is NO/NC CW/CCW.
1. Disconnect air supply to determine failsafe position is NC or NO1.
2. Re-connect air supply to determine operation direction. Operation direction (CW or CCW)
is determined as operation direction from failsafe position, e.g. a valve that is failsafe open
and closes clock wise when air is supplied is a NO CW valve1.
3. Disconnect air supply.
4. Mount “Positioner Feedback Magnet“and “ Positioner Feedback Pickup Bracket” according
to below figure 4.

Important: The distance between “Positioner Feedback Magnet“ and “Positioner Feedback
Pickup NCS” must be 3 mm +/- 0.5 mm in order to ensure problem free position
detection.

1
“Failsafe Position” and ”Operation Direction” must be in accordance with the Design Spec. If “Failsafe Position” or
”Operation Direction” is not in accordance with the Design Spec, this must be handled before any further action is taken.

5. Depending on valve and actuator configuration (NO CCW / NO CW / NC CCW / NC CW)

setup “Positioner Feedback Pickup” and “Positioner Feedback Magnet” according to below
instructions.

5. Trouble Shooting
Below list contains some of the possible problems that may be encountered when working on the
SIPART Positioner.

SIPART stalls during initialization process stops at ”RUN1”:

ƒƒ Confirm that operating air is supplied to SIPART.
ƒƒ Test fail safe position and operation direction of actuator according to paragraph 4.2 and
paragraph 4.3 point 7 above.

SIPART stalls during initialization process stops at ”RUN2”:

ƒƒ Adjust “Positioner Feedback Magnet” according to paragraph 4.3 point 8 to 10 above.

ƒƒ Actuator is not turning when air supply is disconnected/re-supplied:

Check that SIPART is set to give 100 % valve opening. If SIPART is set to 0 % the actuator
will be in vented position and will therefore not move when air supply is interrupted.

ƒƒ Disconnect air supply and remove actuator from valve. By use of working air, test whether
or not the actuator is able to operate. If actuator is not operational inspect it according to
instructions given by maker.

ƒƒ Check that the valve is able to move freely.

If the valve is not able to move freely check exhaust gas bypass line for obstructions such
as foreign objects or large amounts of soot.
If no foreign objects are found the cause might be either valve spindle gasket or damaged
bushings. See “Maintenance of Exhaust Gas By-pass Valve, 5265817-2, for further instruc-
tions.
If the valve is not able to the full 90°, the valve may be mounted in the opposite direction
according to intended flow. See “Maintenance of Exhaust Gas By-pass Valve, 5265817-2,
for further instructions.

Valve is moving freely and in full range when operated without actuator, but is not reaching fully
open or fully closed position when controlled by the actuator.
ƒƒ The end stops may be adjusted incorrectly. See “Maintenance of Exhaust Gas By-pass
Valve, 5265817-2, or instructions given by actuator maker for further instructions.

SIPART seems to be losing the feedback signal:

ƒƒ Check distance between “Positioner Feedback Pickup” and “Positioner Feedback Magnet”.
Distance must be 3 mm +/- 0.5 mm.

Check that cabling is done according to paragraph 4.1 above.

Valve is moving freely, actuator is operational, SIPART is setup according to above this guide but
the system is still not working properly:
ƒƒ Restore SIPART to factory settings according to below procedure:
ƒƒ Press “Hand” button (see Figure 11) for minimum 5 seconds.
ƒƒ By use of “Hand” go to parameter 50 – “PRST - Preset”.
ƒƒ By use of “+” or “-“ select “ALL”.
ƒƒ Press “+” for min. 5 seconds to start initialization.
ƒƒ SIPART will be brought back to factory settings.
ƒƒ Setup SIPART according to paragraph 4.3.

If SIPART is still not working properly, mount another SIPART. If this solves the problem, please
send the faulty SIPART and a description of what has been experienced to:
