The pressurization system on the A330 normally operates automatically to adjust the cabin
altitude and rate of change of altitude to ensure maximum passenger comfort and safety.

The cargo compartment The pressurized areas are :


- the cockpit

- the cabin
- and the cargo compartment

The concept of the system is simple. Air is supplied from the Air
Conditioning Packs to the pressurized areas.

Two outflow valves are used to regulate the amount of air allowed to escape
from the pressurized areas.

The combination of a controller and 2 motors is known as a system (SYS1 & SYS2).
Only one system will operate at any one time with the other system acting as backup.

The system can be used in full or semi-automatic operation.

Fully-automatic : Cabin pressure is controlled from schedules when FMGS inputs are
available.
Semi-automatic (FMGS data is not available) : Crew need to selects landing field elevation
from the CABIN PRESS panel.

In manual mode, the flight crew can control the cabin altitude through the manual
motor of the outflow valves, by operating controls on the CABIN PRESS panel.

Note: Manual operation has priority over all other modes.

They automatically control the cabin pressure, and also generate signals for the ECAM.

In automatic mode, one CPC is active, the other In manual mode, each controller
is on standby. The changeover of controller occur has a backup section, which is
when: independently electrical supplied.

Valve Valve

Each valve is operated by one of the two electric motors (automatic mode), or
by a third electric motor (manual mode).

In automatic mode, the outflow valves automatically close if the cabin altitude is
equal to 15000 ft.

In manual mode, valves move at speed 1/5 of that in automatic mode (easy and
smooth to adjust).

When outflow valves are fully open, a lot of air is allowed to escape.
Cabin differential pressure : decrease
Cabin altitude : increase
Cabin vertical speed : positive

The differential pressure will be at zero on the ground and increase as the aircraft climbs.

The two safety valves prevent the cabin pressure to high positive (8.85 psi above
external ambient pressure) or negative (-1 psi below external pressure).

There is a single indication for the two safety valves.(on ECAM)

During the Take off roll, the system controller signals the outflow valves to
close slightly in order to pre-pressurize the aircraft.This is to avoid a pressure
surge at rotation.

During climb, cabin vertical speed changes according to preprogrammed law, in


order to reach the scheduled cabin altitude at the top of climb defined by the
FMGS cruise FL.The outflow valves will move as required to achieve this.

Once established in cruise, the cabin altitude and differential pressure will remain
steady. The outflow valves will move as required to maintain the cabin altitude.

During descent, Pressure rate (cabin vertical speed) is optimized so that


cabin pressure reaches landing field pressure + 0.1 psi just before landing.

At touchdown, the cabin altitude should be at the airfield elevation and there
should be no differential pressure.

To ensure this, just after landing 80 sec, the outflow valves are fully opened
and automatic change over of the system controller has occur.

In case of both system have failed, the flight crew can


control the pressurization system by selecting:
• MODE SEL p/b to MAN, and
• MAN V/S CTL s/w UP or DN to increase or decrease
cabin altitude
• VALVE SEL to control two or only one outflow valve.

If only one outflow valve is selected, the other one remains under automatic control.

In manually controlled, the outflow valves do not


automatically open at touchdown. (That means in
final approach the crew must set V/S CTL fully up
to ensure A/C depressurized)
