LESSON PLAN FOR WEEK [2] ENDING [07-10-

2022]

SUBJECT: TECHNICAL DRAWING

TOPIC: LINK MECHANISM
TIME: 40 MINUTES
SCHEDULE: 10:20-11:42
AVERAGE AGE: 15 YEARS
LEVEL: SS2
NUMBER OF LEARNERS: 4

TIME TABLE FIT: In the previous lesson, the learners had learnt about the meaning of
involute and Archimedean spiral, its real life application and the construction of theses special
curves.

MAIN AIM: The learners will be able to elaborate on the concept of link mechanism and
interpret and plot out the loci of a simple engine mechanism.

SUBSIDIARY AIMS: By the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to
1. Elaborate on the concept of link mechanism
2. Interpret and plot out the loci of a simple engine mechanism.

PERSONAL AIM: To ensure that the learners fully understand the concept of link mechanism
and interpret and plot out the loci of a simple engine mechanism.

ASSUMPTION: The leaners may have seen or heard about the concept of link mechanism and
some simple engine mechanism from their textbook or online.

ANTICIPATED PROBLEM: The learner may find it difficult to understand the concept of
link mechanism and the process of interpreting and ploting out the loci of a simple engine
mechanism.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: The teacher will have to explain extensively about the concept of
link mechanism and the steps involved in interpreting and ploting out the loci of a simple
engine mechanism.

TEACHING MATERIAL: Drawing materials and equipment, Posters, Charts, Video clips
etc.

LEAD IN: In simple mechanisms, it is often necessary to know the paths of points on their
moving parts. These are determined by assuming a number of different positions of the moving
parts and then locating the corresponding positions of the points.

PROCEDURE

STEP 1: CONCEPT OF LINK MECHANISM

Link mechanism is defined as a piece of machinery which operates and locates its locus
according to the definite principle.
The link mechanism is a typical example of the operational technique of engines or
machines that has reciprocating action. It involves the inter-dependability of most machine
parts. A component part cannot operate in isolation; it must depend on the function of other
parts for a better result. Some parts or components are linked with one another to enhance a
smooth drive or functionability.

STEP 2: INTERPRETATION AND PLOTTING OF LOCI OF A SIMPLE ENGINE

MECHANISM
Example 1: the figure below shows the crank OC which is attached to a connecting rod AC and
slides about center A. the piston P is about mid way on the connecting rod. Plot the locus of
point P for one complete revolution of CP in a clockwise direction. Given AB = Connecting rod
= 110mm, OC =Crank = Ø70mm and AP = Piston = 50mm away from A.

Solution

INTERACTION PATTERN: The use of explanatory, discussion, play-way, sketching,

teacher to learner and learner to learner method in her teaching method

STUDENTS’ EVALUATION:
1. In your own understanding, elaborate on the concept of link mechanism
2. The figure below is a simple slider crank mechanism, the connecting rod AB is 75mm long
ans the crank OA is 30mm long and the end B moves along a straight line passing through
O. trace the locus of point P 36mm from the point A along the rod for the revolution of OA

TEACHER’S EVALUATION: The learners fully understood the concept of link mechanism
and the steps involved in interpreting and plotting the loci of a simple engine mechanism.

ASSIGNMENT:
1. Elaborate on the concept of link mechanism
2. In the simple slider crank mechanism below the crank OA is 45mm long and the connecting
rod AB 150mm long. Plot the locus of a point Q 60mm away from A on the rod for one
revolution of the crank.

CONCLUSION: The engineers, in fact the mechanical engineers cannot operate successfully
without the knowledge of each component part of an engine. Every component part of an
engine is important but the functional component that links other part are equally important.

BIBLICAL PRINCIPLE: PURPOSE: The function of believers of Christ is to be a blessing to

the nations as the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.” [Matt. 5:13-16]
BIBLICAL INTEGRATED LESSON: By the end of the lesson, the learners will understand
that just as the kink mechanism has components which are linked together and which work
together for the functionability of the engine so we as believers have our role to play in God’s

plan and purpose and that is to be the salt of the earth and light of the world to not only our
fellow brethren but to the world as a whole.
