TIME TABLE FIT: In the previous lesson, the learners had learnt about the meaning of
involute and Archimedean spiral, its real life application and the construction of theses special
curves.
MAIN AIM: The learners will be able to elaborate on the concept of link mechanism and
interpret and plot out the loci of a simple engine mechanism.
SUBSIDIARY AIMS: By the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to
1. Elaborate on the concept of link mechanism
2. Interpret and plot out the loci of a simple engine mechanism.
PERSONAL AIM: To ensure that the learners fully understand the concept of link mechanism
and interpret and plot out the loci of a simple engine mechanism.
ASSUMPTION: The leaners may have seen or heard about the concept of link mechanism and
some simple engine mechanism from their textbook or online.
ANTICIPATED PROBLEM: The learner may find it difficult to understand the concept of
link mechanism and the process of interpreting and ploting out the loci of a simple engine
mechanism.
TEACHING MATERIAL: Drawing materials and equipment, Posters, Charts, Video clips
etc.
LEAD IN: In simple mechanisms, it is often necessary to know the paths of points on their
moving parts. These are determined by assuming a number of different positions of the moving
parts and then locating the corresponding positions of the points.
PROCEDURE
STUDENTS’ EVALUATION:
1. In your own understanding, elaborate on the concept of link mechanism
2. The figure below is a simple slider crank mechanism, the connecting rod AB is 75mm long
ans the crank OA is 30mm long and the end B moves along a straight line passing through
O. trace the locus of point P 36mm from the point A along the rod for the revolution of OA
TEACHER’S EVALUATION: The learners fully understood the concept of link mechanism
and the steps involved in interpreting and plotting the loci of a simple engine mechanism.
ASSIGNMENT:
1. Elaborate on the concept of link mechanism
2. In the simple slider crank mechanism below the crank OA is 45mm long and the connecting
rod AB 150mm long. Plot the locus of a point Q 60mm away from A on the rod for one
revolution of the crank.
CONCLUSION: The engineers, in fact the mechanical engineers cannot operate successfully
without the knowledge of each component part of an engine. Every component part of an
engine is important but the functional component that links other part are equally important.
