Lesson Plan: Linking Words

Objectives:
Students will be able to define linking words and explain their importance in writing and
speaking
Students will be able to identify and categorize different types of linking words, including
conjunctions, prepositions, and adverbials
Students will be able to use linking words in their own writing

Materials:
 PowerPoint presentation with slides on linking words and a homework assignment
 Whiteboard and markers
 Handout on linking words (optional)

Introduction (5 minutes):
Engage students with a brief discussion on the importance of writing and speaking clearly and
cohesively
Introduce the topic of linking words and explain that they play an important role in achieving
clear and cohesive communication

Overview and Types of Linking Words (25 minutes)


Use the PowerPoint presentation to guide students through an overview of linking words and
the different types of linking words
Use the whiteboard to write examples and have students identify the linking words in each
example
Encourage questions and interaction from students

Practice with Linking Words (5 minutes)


Use the activity on slide 7 to provide students with hands-on practice in finding linking words
in a short text
Ask volunteers to share their answers and provide feedback

Homework Assignment (5 minutes)


Review the homework assignment, which asks students to write a paragraph using a variety of
linking words
Remind students to turn in their assignments at the beginning of the next class

Conclusion (5 minutes)
Use the conclusion slide to wrap up the class and review key points
Encourage students to ask any remaining questions

Assessment:
Observe student participation during class and the quality of their answers to the linking word
activity
Review students' homework assignments for their use of linking words and overall writing
quality
