A GT®-Ring is constructed of superior elastomers and two thermoplastic back up rings to withstand harsh fluid and application
conditions. This double-acting rod or piston seal, provides the quality and reliability the Energy industry requires. The GT®-Ring
offers an outstanding combination of easy installation, low leakage and long service life for exceptional performance in many static
and dynamic sealing applications.

GT®-RING TYPES
GT®-Ring is a compression type seal, much like an o-ring, and is designed as a product performance improvement over the use of
standard o-rings and backup rings.
The GT®-Ring is designed to fit existing AS5857 and AS4716 o-ring glands. The industry gland standards allow three different
gland width; zero back up ring, one back up ring, and two back up ring. For each size there is a corresponding GT®-Ring to fit. The
information in this catalog applies only to one back up ring width. The other size options are available as non-standard designs
through your Greene, Tweed representive.*
The below figure shows the comparisons of different o-ring back up ring options compared to the GT®-Ring options.
thermoplastic back up rings to withstand harsh fluid and application conditions above those of a traditional o-ring and back up ring.
The GT®-Ring integrates the backup ring onto an elastomer flange extending from the sealing stem. This arrangement sets up a
hydro-mechanical action of the backup ring under differential pressure loading. Bearing in mind, that elastomers are essentially
“incompressible fluid media,” the pressure load, acting through the viscous elastomer, “activates” the backup ring, positioning it
towards the clearance gap, in phase with the applied fluid pressure load. The behavior of the backup, as an anti-extrusion device, is
not dependant on the deformation properties of the applied backup ring material, as is the case with an o-ring backup ring design
strategies. This allows the extrusion gap to always be covered by the anti-extrusion ring. The back up ring also ensures that the
elastomer is not “nibbled.”

CHAMFERS
Sharp edges can be damaging to elastomers during installation. In order to help prevent installation damage due to skiving of the
elastomer, an adequate lead-in chamfer for all mating hardware is strongly recommended. The hardware should also be de-burred
to ensure that there are no sharp objects that can tear or cut the o-ring during install.

LUBRICATION
When installing o-rings in a radial type gland, it is advisable to ensure that the seal and hardware is properly lubricated with a
suitable lubricant. Lubricants will aid in installation and help prevent elastomer damage during installation. Care should be taken into
account when using lubricants such that they do not interfere with the operation or compatibly of the system or seal. For example,
FDA approved lubricant should be used in FDA applications.
STRETCH
Typically, installation will require the o-ring to be stretched over existing hardware in order to seat in the seal gland. The installation
stretch may be greater than the maximum allowable installed stretch of 3%. When stretching an o-ring during installation it is
important to consider the typical properties values for elongation at break. The elongation will give the designer an idea on how
much stretch an o-ring can withstand during installation before being damaged. Small inner diameters o-rings should be given
special considerations as they are more prone to snapping when stretched.
