Integrated Design Project

Problem 2.21 a. Develop a table showing the gravity loads in all columns based on tributary area and live
load reductions. Remember that the columns in the lateral load resisting systems will also carry wind or
seismic forces. Wind loads will be determined in part c; seismic loads are in the Chapter 13 Integrated
Design Project problem.

Gravity Loads

Dead Load:
The roof and floor dead loads are given:
Roof:
Roofing 5 psf
Insulation 2 psf
Deck 2 psf
Beams 3 psf
Joists 3 psf
Misc. 5 psf
Total 20 psf

Floor:
Slab and Deck 60 psf
Beams and Girders 8 psf
Misc. 12 psf
Total 80 psf

Note that these loads include the slab, deck and member self-weights.

Live Load:
Minimum roof live load is 20 psf reducible.

For flexibility in locating the office corridors the floor Live Load for corridors will be used. ASCE 7-16
Table 4-1 requires that for Office Buildings, lobbies and first-floor corridors be designed for 100 psf, and
corridors above first floor be designed for 80 psf. These are both reducible per the requirements given in
ASCE 7 Chapter 4.7 Reduction of Uniform Live Loads.

By designing the entire floor for 80 psf, the requirement to include partition load can be ignored.

Snow Load:
The ASCE 7 snow load map, indicates that the Ground Snow Load, pg, for Downers Grove, IL is 25psf.
For flat roofs, ASCE 7 defines the design flat roof snow load as:

p f = 0.7CeCt I s pg (7.3-1)

Assume a partially exposed urban area, Ce = 1.0.

Office building, Ct = 1.0.

Office building in Risk Category II, Is = 1.00.

Unified Design of Steel Structures, 3rd edition

Thereforee,
7 (1.0 )(1.0 )(1.0 )( 25 ) = 17.5 psf
p f = 0.7Ce Ct I s pg = 0.7

Since the roof live loadd is greater th

han the uniform
m snow load,, for determinning column ggravity loads, the
roof live load
l will treatted as a non- reducible load rather than determining snow drifts aat this time

Façade Load:

The consttants given in the problem statement aree:

Value provided is 3-second gust wind speeds at 33 ft above ground for Exposure C Category, based on linear
interpolation between contours. Wind speeds are interpolated in accordance with the 7-16 Standard. Wind speeds
correspond to approximately a 7% probability of exceedance in 50 years (annual exceedance probability =
0.00143, MRI = 700 years).

Mountainous terrain, gorges, ocean promontories, and special wind regions should be examined for unusual wind
conditions.

Ice thicknesses on structures in exposed locations at elevations higher than the surrounding terrain and in valleys
and gorges may exceed the mapped values.
Values provided are equivalent radial ice thicknesses due to freezing rain with concurrent 3-second gust speeds,
for a 500-year mean recurrence interval, and temperatures concurrent with ice thicknesses due to freezing rain.
Thicknesses for ice accretions caused by other sources shall be obtained from local meteorological studies. Ice
thicknesses in exposed locations at elevations higher than the surrounding terrain and in valleys and gorges may
exceed the mapped values.
