Interview Report
By Gauransh Dixit

Diwakar Dixit, 96

My grandfather lived in a joint family with mother, father, 2 real brothers and
grandparents. They resided in a house in Shivpur, Varanasi. In his family, father was the
only one earning. He mentioned that his father was a farmer and he and his brother had
a lot of responsibility to be fulfilled. So, he used to go with his father to the farmland to
help him. My grandfather partially
remembered a historical event which
took place when he went outside of his
state for the first time to look for a job.
In 1945, he arrived in Mumbai looking
for a job.

He worked for a year, and in his

workplace he saw a lot of unfair
treatment. Which disencourage him
from working further. He even saw some
captures of a person in front of his eyes, which scared him a lot. He also mentioned that
in a day approximately he got 2-3 hours of spare time. Where he tried to spend it
efficiently, I mean without wasting a single minute. He mostly spent his time with his
brother and his friends playing on the ground.

My grandfather never got his pocket money, he stated that during that era there was
a lot of hard work by a person but the wages/salary was very less. So his father has to
manage all the expenses or budget through which he never got his pocket money.
