Interview Report

Subbalakshmi, 71

Subbalakshmi lived with her 5 brothers, 2 sisters, parents and grandparents.


They lived in an individual house with ample space for outdoor activities. Her
extended family consisted of her father with 4 brothers and 2 sisters while her
mother had 1 sister and 2 brothers.They lived in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India.
While in school, The Indo China war happened(1961- 1962) and (71-72) the
Pakistan and India war. It was a hard time for the people of India but it brought
joy knowing we got back our territories.

Subbalakshmi would wake up at 6 am and go to school in the morning and


reach home by 2 pm. She would take care of the household and do her
homework soon after that. Her house had compulsory outdoor play hours
between 4: 30 and 6:30 and by the time of sunset, she would be back home. She
had spare time after returning from school and completing her homework up
till bed time at 10pm .During her spare time she would spend time with her
siblings playing games like kabaddi and badminton. They would also play ludo
and carrom during rainy days when outdoor activities were not available.There
was also strict study time allocated each day.

Spare time was not affected by where she lived but the order of the
times.Because she lived in a joined family, the work would get divided and so it
would get done faster and they would still have an enjoyable time.All siblings
were encouraged to do activities like music, art and dance. Subbalakshmi and
her siblings never received pocket money. Her parents would manage all
payments and provide for all things that the children needed. They depended
on their parents completely.
