SAMPLE PROBLEM – CONDUCTION ON PLANE WALL

Furnace wall has a thickness of 30 mm. The wall is insulated from outside with 250 mm
insulating material. Thermal conductivity values for the wall and insulation materials are
0.1 W/m K and 0.01 W/m K, respectively. The furnace wall is 650 0C. The allowable
temperature on the outer side of insulation is 80 0C. Calculate the heat loss per sq m in
watt.

Q = A (T1 – T2)
(x1/ k1 + X2/ k2)
= 1 (650 – 80)
0.03/ 0.10 + 0.25/ 0.01

Q = 22.53 Watt per m2

Note:
If resistivity of furnace wall &
insulation are given,
then
Q = 1 (650 – 80)
Given R1 + R 2

X1 = 30 mm = 0.030 m

X2 = 250 mm = 0.250 m

k1 = 0.1 W/m K

k2 = 0.01 W/m K

T1 = 650 C

T2 = 80 C
