Comprehension

Read the passage below carefully and answer the questions that follow:
The radio
The radio has become an important means of communication. It is also known as wireless. It is a
machine that is used to send and receive programme broadcasts to the public through sound
waves. The radio was invented by an Italian engineer called Guglielmo Marconi in the year
1912. The invention of the radio brought people in the world closer to each other.
Spoken words can be heard thousands of kilometres away. The ideas of great men, songs of
inspiration and entertaining singers and speeches of important statesmen can reach every home
which owns a radio set. Compared to the situation twenty years ago, today many homes in
Zambia both in rural and urban areas have radio sets. There are different types, shapes, sizes and
colours of radio sets. Some radios use electricity, while others use cells or batteries.
A radio set has different knobs and buttons used to switch on and off, others to tune stations and
others to increase or reduce the volume. Aerials are fixed on radios so that the listener can
receive the radio signals clearer and better. The radio has improved over the years. Many radio
sets have cassette, DVD and screen parts where tapes, CDs and flash disks can be inserted. Radio
sets that have cassettes and DVD players can use compact tapes and discs that have recorded
music or any other information.
What is special about these complex sets is that they have special buttons to play, stop, forward,
rewind, record and eject the tapes and recorded messages. When you have a radio set, you can
listen to different radio programmes such as news, announcements and advertisements. Each
radio station has its unique programme arrangement.
