Messages by Phone

A. Expressions dealing with telephone conversation


Some expressions below are used for making a call :
 Good morning/afternoon/evening.
 May I speak to ..., please?
 May I talk to the General Manager, please?
 This ... (your name) from ... (your company’s name)
 I am calling about ... (your purpose).
 Could you put me through Mr./Mrs. ... ?
 Could I leave a message?
 Could you take my message for Mr./Mrs. ... ?
 Could you ask them to call back later?
The common expressions of receiving a call are as follows :
 Good morning/afternoon/evening + your company name.
 May I help you?
 Who’s calling, plesae?
 Who’s speking, please?
 Could I have your name,please?
 Could I have your phone number, please?
 Just a moment, please.
 Would you mind holding the phone for a moment?
 Sorry, the line is busy.
 I ‘m sorry, sir/ma’am. The line is busy.
 I’ll put you through Mr./Mrs. ...
 Do you want to hold or call back later.
 Could I take a message, please?
 Could you please phone extension 123?
 You are through to extension 212.
 Could you speak up, please? It’s a terrible connection.
 Thank you for calling.
 Bye.

Caller : Morning. Could I speak to Mrs. Eliana, please?
Secretary : Who’s speaking, please?
Caller : This is Doni Nogroho from the Widya Paper Company.
Secretary : Would you mind holding the phone for a moment, please?
Caller : All right.
Secretary: I’m sorry. Mrs. Elianan is having a meeting now. Would you like to leave a message?
Caller : Yes. Plase ask her to call me back after the meeting.
Secretary : All right, Sir. Can I have your phone number, please?
Caller : Certainly. It’s 081320012461.
Secretary : That’s 081320012461. Anything else, sir?
Caller : No, thank you.
Secretary : Okay, sir. I’ll give her your message.
Caller : Thank you. Bye.
Secretary : You’re welcome. Bye

B. Simple Present Tense


What is the Simple Present Tense? (Apa itu Simple Present Tense?)
Simple Present Tense digunakan ketika:
 Tindakan atau aksi secara umum.
 Tindakan yang terjadi sehari-hari atau kebiasaan.
 Kebenaran yang bersifat umum.
Contoh :
 The sun rises in the east (fact).
 The lesson start at 7 every morning ( habitual)
Pola kalimat:
 ( + ) Subject + Verb1 + Object + Modifier
 ( - ) Subject + do/does + not + Verb1 + Object + Modifier
 ( ? ) Do/does + Subject + Verb1 + Object + Modifier
Contoh :
 The sun sets in the west.
The sun doesn’t set in the east.
Does the sun set in the west?
 The boys always go to school by motorcycle.
The boys do not go to school by bus.
Do the boys go to school by motorcycle?
Note : if the subject is the third person (he/she/it), we must add s/es.

We use do/does to make question and negatif sentences.

C. Indirect/ Reported Speech


Report Speech atau Indirect Speech (kalimat laporan/kalimat tidak langsung)digunakan apabila kita
ingin menceritakan kembali pendapat atau pembicaraa seseorang kepada orang lain.
Reported speech biasanya diawali oleh kata kerja pengantar seperti : Say, Tell, Answer, Inform,
Explain, Add, Order, dan Command.
Reported Speech dibentuk dari : STATEMENT, COMMAND/IMPERATIVE, QUESTION.
1. Statement ( Pernyataan)

2. Imperative/ Command (Perintah)


a. Positive Command, misalnya:
Contoh :
 “Come in, please,”Tom asked her to come in.
 “Go away,”the cop ordered. The cop ordered us to go away.
b. Negative Command, misalnya:
Contoh:
 “Don’t go out,”Mr. Simon told me not to go out.
 “Don’t distrub me,” She asked me not to distrub her
3. Question (Pertanyaan)
a. Yes/No Question
Adalah kata kerja bantu seperti : is, am, are, was, were, do, does, did, has, have, had, can-could,
May-might, will-would, shall-should, dan jawabannya YES (Ya) atau NO (Tidak)
Dalam YES/NO QUESTIONS, the Reported Speech dimulai dengan IF (apakah)atau WHETER
(apakah) +Subject + Verb

PRESENT TENSE (Verb 1) menjadi PAST TENSE (Verb 2)

b. WH-/How Questions
Adalah pertanyaan yang diawali dengan Wh-/How-Questions seperti :
WHAT, WHY, WHERE, WHOSE, WHO, HOW, + Subject + Verb.

PRESENT TENSE (Verb 1) menjadi PAST TENSE (Verb 2)

D. Simple Past Future Tense


♣ Past future tense dapat digunakan untuk membicarakan aspek masa depan, baik itu aksi atau
perencanaan tertentu, prediksi, maupun janji, dalam sudut pandang masa lalu. Past future tense
selalu mengandungi “would” atau “was/were going to”
♣ Kedua kata “would” dan “was/were going to” tersebut selalu ada dalam tiga bentuk past future
tense, yakni positive, negative, dan interrogative. Mari, kita lihat tabel di bawah ini untuk
komponen dari masing-masing bentuk past future tense:

Past Future Tense Komponen


Positive Subject + would + verb 1, atau

Subject + was/were going to + verb 1


Negati Subject + would not (wouldn’t) + verb 1, atau

Subject + was/were not (weren’t) going to + verb 1


Interrogative Would + subject + verb 1 + … ?, atau

Was/were + subject + going to + verb 1 + … ?

♣ Fungsi Past Future Tense


 Menyatakan suatu peristiwa atau kejadian yg akan terjadi pada waktu yang akan datang
dan sudah terjadi di masa lampau.
Contoh :
I should go to Surabaya last year (Saya akan pergi ke Surabaya tahun yang lalu)
 Menyatakan suatu peristiwa atau kejadian yang tidak terjadi pada masa lampau karena
syaratnya tidak terpenuhi serta tidak akan mungkin terjadi pada saat ini.
Contoh :
 If I were rich I would travel around the world. (Seandainya saya kaya,saya
akan berkeliling dunia)
 He would be a model, if he had the chance. (Dia akan menjadi seorang model,
jika ada kesempatan)
Contoh kalimat:
 I would sit here with me. (Dia akan duduk bersama saya disini.) (+)
 Dini would go to the grocery store. (Dini akan pergi ke took bahan makanan). (+)
 I would not sit here with him.(Saya tidak akan duduk disini dengan dia) (-)
 She was going to the market. (Dia akan pergi ke pasar) (+)
 Were they going to the party together? (Akankah mereka pergi ke pesta bersama?)
