Lesson PREPARE CLIENT FOR HAIR
1 BLEACHING

What’s In

Hello, Dear Learners, this lesson covers the knowledge, skills and attitude in the
performance of hair bleaching activity. It involves the preparation of the client.
Begin this lesson by checking your prior knowledge about the different principles in
preparing the client for service. The knowledge and skills will help you in doing the task
following the standard procedure. There are a series of questions in the activities in the
module. Following the steps in hair bleaching, you need to Consult client on health condition
and previous hair chemical treatment availed, advise client on possible service options and
outcome results, check and analyze conditions of the hair and scalp, advise client to remove
all personal accessories .provides clients with protective clothing and gadgets following
salon procedures.

What’s New
Bleaching or lightening creates a desired color foundation. This new color foundation
may be the finished result, or it may be the first step of a double – process application. Before
beginning the lightening process, it is important to understand that achieving the desired
shade requires that you consider not only the virgin hair color, how long the product should
be left on to achieve the desired stage of lightening, and the resulting porosity of the hair
shaft, but also selection of the appropriate product to achieve the desired color foundation.

The hair becomes more porous during the lightening treatment, a condition necessary
to permit penetration of a toner. Even naturally light hair or gray hair may need a pre –
lightening process in order to achieve the necessary degree of porosity for the acceptance of a
toner or tint.

What Is It
4
To ensure successful results when performing hair bleaching services, the colorist must
follow the steps in how to prepare client. This is to ensure that clients are comfortable with the service
you will provide for them. Unlike haircoloring, hair bleaching takes serious effort to achieve the
desired results satisfying them is one of the most important factors that you will consider to attract
more customers.

Hair bleaching or lightening (terms used interchangeably in this CBLM) is

removing pigment from the hair and is always a popular salon service. Changing styles
determine if the entire head is lightened, or just one area, or if a special effect is created.
Lighter strands draw attention to the individual.

Bleaching or lightening creates a desired color foundation. This new color

foundation may be the finished result, or it may be the first step of a double – process
application. Before beginning the lightening process, it is important to understand that
achieving the desired shade requires that you consider not only the virgin hair color, how
long the product should be left on to achieve the desired stage of lightening, and the resulting
porosity of the hair shaft, but also selection of the appropriate product to achieve the desired
color foundation.

What’s More

Activity 2. Do the following:

1. Draw a diagram showing the different parts of hair shaft.
2. Draw a diagram of skin/scalp structure and label each part.

Activity 3: Self- Assessment

Find out if you have familiarized the different tools and materials used in hair coloring.

Lesson 1.1: Consult client on health condition and previous hair chemical
treatment availed

5
Figure 1:
Shows how to consult a client

How to assess the client’s special personal needs

1. Discuss with the client what services she/he wants and expects. Be sure to have a
service record card with you.
2. Listen to what she/he tells you and understand what she/he requires you to do.
3. .Tell your client the limitations. Make suggestions on the service you are sure
would suit her/him.
4. Show fashion catalogues/magazines to help and guide the client to decide.
5. Once a client has arrived for an appointment and you have determined what
services have been requested, prepare the client accordingly
6. Before the hair bleaching procedure, remind the client to not wash their hair the day
or night before his appointment so that the scalp will not be irritated.
7. If hair is previously colored or highlighted with bleach, the client must make sure
to do a deep treatment at least a week before the procedure to provide some
protection to the hair strands during the bleaching process.
8. Ask client about their hair history. Previous hair chemical treatments may affect the
hair bleaching procedure.

Lesson1. 1.1. Checked for possible skin allergies

PRELIMINARY LIGHTENING STRAND TEST

A preliminary strand test is necessary to judge the length of time to leave any
lightening mixture on the hair, and to find out in what condition the hair is for lightening.

PATCH TEST FOR TONERS

CAUTION - Patch test is required only if followed with a toner or tint application.

A patch test must be made 24 hours prior to the application of a toner. To save the
client’s time, the strand test for lightening should be made the day she has the patch test. This

6
procedure is important to check if the client is sensitive to the bleaching product or not. If the
scalp shows any sensitivity or abrasions, lighteners are not recommended.

Lesson 1.2: Advise client on possible service options and outcome results
Similar to hair coloring always give

Figure 2: Shows the outcome results of client’s preferences

1. Look at the client directly. Do not look at her through the mirror. Ask what she is thinking
about doing with her hair color. Ask leading questions. Let her talk. Keep her on track by
discussing the recent history of her hair (over the past six months). Your questions might
include the following:
• Are you looking for a temporary or permanent change?
• Do you want color all over or just a few highlights?
• Do you see yourself with a more conservative or dramatic type of color?
• Have you seen so-and-so’s (e.g., a TV celebrity) hair? That color would look great
on you.

2. Recommend at least two different hair color options. Show pictures of different ranges of
colors, from brunette to blond, red, and highlighted colors. Review the procedure and
application technique, cost of the service, and follow-up maintenance. Sometimes several
steps may be necessary to obtain a hair color result. A client may love a certain haircolor, but
may not be able to afford the service. Have a more economical backup solution ready.
3. Be honest and do not promise more than you can deliver. If you are faced with a corrective
situation, let the client know what you can accomplish today and how many more visits it will
take to achieve the final results that she wants.
4. Gain approval from the client.

Lesson 1.3 Checks and analyzes condition of the hair and scalp.
Each bleaching service is unique service. The hairdresser must carefully analyze the
hair and scalp and consult with the client. Strand tests must be taken to ensure good results.
But even the most skilled hairdresser will occasionally have problems. This may be due to the

7
particular structure or condition of the client’s hair or to the effects of prior treatments to the
hair.

Blow – drying, wind, harsh shampoos, and chemical services all take their toll on the
condition of the hair. Coating compounds such as hair sprays, styling agents, and some
conditioners can prevent color penetration. Preventive and curative steps that you should take
include the following:

1. Incorporate reconditioning into any chemical service that you give.

2. Ensure that the client uses high – quality products at home.
3. Precondition hair if your analysis tells you it is damaged. Use a penetrating
conditioner that can deposit protein, oils, and moisture regulators.
4. Complete each chemical service by normalizing the pH with a finishing rinse. This
will restore the cuticle’s protective capacity.
5. If hair is still irresponsive after a conditioning treatment, postpone any further
chemical service until the hair is reconditioned.
Hair conditions include:
 Normal
 Dry
 Porous
 Tinted
 Damaged
Client’s health condition includes:
 Pregnant
 With skin allergy / irritation
 With asthma
Clients with any of these health conditions must not be treated with hair bleach.

Hair is considered damaged when the hair has one or more of the following conditions:
 Rough texture
 Over – porous
 Brittle and dry
 Breakage
 No elasticity
 Spongy, matted when dry
 Absorbs moisture too rapidly
Previous Treatments that may have been done on the Hair:

 Straightening
 Perming
 Relax

8
 Coloring
 Rebonding
 Hair bleaching

1.4 Advises client to remove all personal accessories and provides

clients with protective clothing and gadgets following salon
procedures.
1.4.1 Advises client to remove all personal accessories
Do not let the client wear any jewelry during the bleaching process. Jewelry can
collect the bleach dust causing skin irritations.

1.4.2 Provides client with protective clothing and gadgets following salon
procedures

1, Wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This includes laboratory coat
and clean closed toe shoes. By law, PPE or Personal Protective Equipment should
be used and supplied during certain work in the hairdressing industry. Just like a
builder has to wear a hard hat, the hairdresser and client must protect themselves from
injury and damage

2 Work comfortably.
3 Avoid continually twisting or stretching your body
4 Remember to check that the chair is clean
5 Place tissue or a towel over the client’s collar and shoulders
6 Place a suitably sized gown in position and secure it
7 Maintain high standards of hygiene. Wash hands with soap and water,
or use a liquid hand sanitizer, prior to performing any services on a
client.
8 Make sure all the client’s clothes are covered and all materials are
secured so that they remain in place
9 Make sure nothing falls between the client and the chair back
10 Do not tuck in absorbent materials – they act like sponges. Liquids can
seep through and damage clothing.
11 Clean and disinfect tools and materials before and after servicing each
client in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Code
(OHSC) requirement.

The client must wear

1. Towel- used to blot excess water. It can also be placed under or over the
shoulder cape. Ideal size of towel for hairdressing is 12 in x 27 in while
the ideal color is black.

9
2. Neck Strip – used for sanitary purposes
when cutting hair or giving other hair
treatments to prevent the cape from
touching the neck of the client.

3. Hair duck clips/ clamp – used for

fastening the cape in place and for securing
the hair when draping

4. Barrier Cream It is use to protect the skin

of the client from
the harsh chemicals

The operator must wear

5. Aprons are used during coloring, perming and relaxing processes.

They protect the clothes from spillages and can prevent damage. It is
also advisable to cover your client with a cape of some sort, as they
need to have their clothes protected from any possible spillages or
damage.
6. Gloves that are reusable or disposable protect hairdresser’s
hands from chemicals such as coloring products, bleaches, perm
lotions and chemical relaxers. Without protection there is a chance
of contracting dermatitis which, if severe, can prevent you from
continuing hairdressing as a career

7. Mask: To protect you from harsh smell of the chemicals and IATF
requirements hygienic purposes.

Tit le : DRAPING CLIENT FOR HAIR LIGHTENING

Performance Objective :
Given the necessary supplies and materials, you should be able to drape the client for hair lightening
treatment.
Supplies and Materials :
 Dark colored towels
 Plastic cape
 Clips
 Protective cream
 Ear pads
 Neck strip (cloth or tissue)
 Hand sanitizer/alcohol

10
Instructions before draping the client for hair bleaching:
1. Prepare materials and supplies for the service.
2. Sanitize hands.
3. Ask the client to remove all neck and hair jewelry and store away
them in a safe place.
4. Remove objects from the client’s hair.
5. Turn the client’s collar to the inside.
6. If the hair is loaded with hair styling products, the hair must be
shampooed first without scratching the scalp, then blow-dried.
7. Proceed with the appropriate draping method.
The comfort and protection of the client by proper draping must always be considered during
hair dressing services. Protection of the skin and clothing assures clients that the hairdresser is personally
and professionally concerned about their comfort and safety.
Methods of draping depend on the built of the client and the service being performed.
Consideration for the client is one of your most important responsibilities as a hairdresser. The client’s
built like small, medium, large or extra large must be considered to determine the size of drapery to use.
PROCEDURE:
1. Slide towel down from back of client’s head and place lengthwise across the client’s shoulders.
2. Cross the ends of the towel beneath the chin and place the cape over the towel. Fasten in the back
and adjust the towel over the cape.
3. Fold the towel over the top of the cape and secure in front.
4. It is advisable to apply a protective cream around the hairline immediately prior to the application
of the chemicals to the hair to prevent possible skin irritation.
