The lesson deals on how to perform post coloring activity.
Activity 1. Mark Me In
Below are some practices in salon for post hair coloring activity.
Mark each item √ if you think it’s good and χ for your negative answers. Use
a separate sheet for your answer.
1. Clean and sterilize tools and materials after treatment.
2. A patch test is given to check evenness of the hair color.
3. To sanitize with alcohol, use 40%.
4. Proper shampooing, conditioning and rinsing to remove coloring
residues.
5. Draping garments must be dried for next client use
6. Blow-drying helps to enhance the coloring of the hair.
7. Discard soiled supplies and materials whenever possible.
8. A word of advice should be given to patron for her hair color
maintenance at home.
9. Cleaning and mopping of the working area must be a daily routine
after the service.

Color Care
*Make sure that clothes both yours and your patron’s are always fully
protected by gowns and towels.
*Remove colorants effectively, by thorough rinsing on completion of the
coloring process.
*Make notes of any problems you encounter.
*Complete record cards by noting all details clearly and accurately including
the final results achieved.
*Remove tints by adding a little water, lightly massaging the hair, and
rinsing. Others may require shampooing.
If there are any skin stains, apply a little tint directly to the stain to soften it
and rinse.
Hair Care and Maintenance
When any color service is complete, it is imperative to give the client the
correct advice. Discuss the following to ensure a long-lasting result and
client satisfaction.
*Do not wash the hair for at least 48 hours.
*Use a moisture-rich conditioner.
*Wash hair with cold water as much as possible to keep the hair healthy
and shiny.
*Avoid harsh soaps, chemicals (especially chlorine) and any harsh shampoo.
*Try to keep out of extended exposure to sunlight and water.
*Comb and brush the hair daily. Use the type of brush best suited to the
hair. Avoid excessive brushing or combing in the opposite direction.
*Suggest that the client have the hair trimmed and styled at regular
intervals in order to make the hairstyle more serviceable.
*Retouch color every four to six weeks; depending on the color’s lightening
in regards to the natural hair color.

*Use the right shampoo and conditioner. There are special ones available
especially a for hair that has been colored.
*Avoid brushing the hair when it is wet and blow-drying harshly. Be careful
with the hair.
*Hair care is extremely important so be careful during the summer. Protect
the hair from sun and salt water. It should be rinsed thoroughly after
swimming.
*Get split ends cut every six weeks or less.

*Remove loose material from combs and brushes, wash and disinfect them,
then dry them.
*Always check the manufacturer’s instructions before using liquid

Occupational Health and Safety Standards
Occupational Health and Safety Standards is a planned system to prevent
illness and injury at the workplace by recognizing and identifying hazards
and risks. It states that every salon owner and its employees must identify
the risks and hazards at the workplace and find ways to remove them.

Risk management is a logical and systematic approach, which if followed,
can reduce injury and disease in the workplace.

Requirements in Identifying Hazards in the Workplace


*The workplace must be surveyed and the survey form must be made
available to the employees
*Determine if the identified hazards require the use of personal Protective
Equipment (PPE). Employees must identify appropriate PPE for the
particular hazard.

* The employees must know about the hazards to avoid accidents.
* The employees should know the proper use of Personal Protective
Equipment.
*special attention must be given to working condition that can produce
hazards.

*Handling of infectious wastes, liquid/dry wastes, and special wastes
*Exposure to chemicals like insecticides and disinfectants used in cleaning

Hazards and Its Effects
A hazard is a condition where there is a threat to life, health, property, and
environment.
Types of Hazards:
1.Physical Hazards. Often have human and natural elements. Includes
earthquake, floods and typhoon. May also include exposure to improper
wiring and frayed cords of electric wiring or lighting in the workplace; injury
due to poor posture; repetitive movements; and slipping on the floor.
2.Biological Hazards. Originates from foreign organism. Diseases in human
come from this hazard in the form of infection caused by bacteria, virus, or
parasites.
3.Chemical Hazards. Chemicals are used in agricultural and commercial
industry and even in salon, such as hydrogen peroxide, hair color and
lightening, straightening products, acrylics, nail polishes and polish
removers. Because of its properties, it can cause various negative effects on
humans, workplace, property or environment.
4.Mechanical Hazards. Involved equipment, machines, or mechanical
processes even compressed gases or liquids. Injury depends on how the
accident happens like slips and falls, and is the responsibility of the
employer or agency to make sure that risks are minimized or eliminated.
5.Ergonomic Hazards. This harms the musculoskeletal system of workers.
Involves uncomfortable or poor body positioning.

Waste Management
It involves the collection, transport, processing, recycling, or disposal
of waste materials. It is the responsibility of the company or owner of the
building to develop a system to identify the waste collected in the area and
find ways on their proper disposal.
Types of wastes
Solid wastes-dry materials that are considered useless and dump or thrown
away. Come from housekeeping activities in the households, offices, hotels,
shops, schools, and other institutions. Examples: materials made from
plastic, bottles, cans, Styrofoam, paper and cardboard, etc.
Liquid wastes-examples include human waste, industrial waste water from
ponds and chemical plants, flood water and other wastewater from different
sources.
Classification of Waste According to Their Properties
Biodegradable-wastes that can be decomposed by bacteria and other
microorganisms. Liquid and solid wastes, such as human and animal waste,
food wastes and agricultural wastes.
Non-biodegradable-wastes that will not be decomposed by living organisms.
Wastes accumulated in the environment because it cannot return to its
original form like plastic, plastic containers and others
Classification of Wastes According to Their Effects on Human health and
Environment
Hazardous wastes-coming from commercial, industrial and agricultural
activities. Examples are paint, mortar oil, insecticides, air fresheners,
battery and others.
Non-hazardous wastes- include safe materials like paper, cardboards,
wrappings, paper packaging materials and others
Proper Waste Management
Include the following:
1. Reduce-to lower the amount of waste produced.
2. Reuse-to use again the discarded item if possible.
3. Recycle-to use the discarded materials to make new products like
plastics.
4. Recover-recovering useful wastes to energy programs.
5. Landfill-safe disposal of wastes.

Workplace Safety Guidelines
Safety issues should always be a priority and implemented in the workplace.
The following must be followed:
1. Make sure the entrance is free from trip or fall.
2. Floors should be dried and carpets are free from snags or tears.
3. Nails are not protruded from walls.
4. All surfaces are cleaned and organized.
5. Extension cords are kept and should not cause tripped over.
6. Electric power sockets should not be overloaded.
7. Power switch should be off after use.
8. Electrical equipment should be turned off and unplugged before
leaving the salon.
9. All fire exit should be clear and accessible.
10. Fire extinguishers should always be available. Regular checkup
from Fire Safety Department or recognized company should be carried
out.
11. Signages are visible and readable.
12. All garbage bins are covered.
13. All products that are not in use are covered.
14. Products are labelled clearly.
15. All flammable products are in a safe place and away from any
heat.
16. Hazardous materials should be kept away from children.
17. Smoke detector must be installed and checked up religiously.
18. Smoking should be prohibited in the workplace.
19. The salon has adequate ventilation.
20. Handwashing is implemented as part of personal and client
hygiene

rules and regulations must be followed such as Code of Sanitation issued by
the Department of Labor in the Philippines.
