Super-Fill™ Permanent-
Sleeve (PS) Equipment

The Super-Fill Permanent Sleeve (PS) equipment

is the most commonly used Super-Fill equipment
design (Figure 1). Super-Fill PS equipment helps
maintain pressure integrity between the casing
annulus and ID after drillout. The internal seal-
ing sleeve is made from material that is compat-
ible with the case material of the Super-Fill
assembly. Use the Super-Fill PS equipment
where casing pressure integrity after drillout is
essential.

Note: This equipment is generally not avail-

able with flush-line casing connections. For
these connections, use Super-Fill Removable
Sleeve (RS) equipment (Page 10-5).

The Super-Fill PS equipment’s outer case con-

tains an upper and lower body. The plug seat and
internal sleeve are pinned open, allowing well-
om000119

bore fluid to enter the casing. When a cementing

plug lands on the Super-Fill equipment plug seat,
it shears the retaining pins, allowing the internal
sleeve to shift down and close the ports. A lock
Figure 1—Super-Fill PS equipment with 24-tooth
ring then holds the sleeve closed. A lug and spline
nonrotating feature
locking mechanism prevent the seat and internal
sleeve from rotating during drillout.

During drillout, only the plug seat is removed; the

remaining internal sleeve seals the casing ID to
help provide casing pressure integrity. If the
Super-Fill collar is supplied with an Super Seal II
valve assembly, the
Super Seal II valve will be located in the lower
body below the Super-Fill equipment ports.

Super-Fill™ Removable
Sleeve (RS) Equipment

Description

The Super-Fill Removable Sleeve (RS) equipment

is typically used in flush-line casing applications
where annular clearances are very small (Figure
2). Super-Fill RS equipment helps maintain pres-
sure integrity between the casing annulus and ID
only before drillout. The internal, sealing sleeve is
made from drillable, wrought aluminum, which is
easily drilled with conventional rock or polycrys-
talline diamond compact (PDC) bits.

Super-Fill RS equipment is used in cases where

casing pressure integrity after drillout is not a
specific requirement, such as when drilling liner
or production casing will subsequently cover the
Super-Fill equipment location.

The Super-Fill RS equipment is made from a

single-threaded body or case. The plug seat is
retained within the internal sleeve. The sleeve is
pinned open, allowing wellbore fluid to enter the
om000120

casing. When a cementing plug lands on the Su-

per-Fill equipment plug seat, it shears the retain-
ing pins, allowing the internal sleeve to shift
down and cover the Super-Fill equipment ports. Figure 2—Super-Fill RS equipment

Super-Fill™ Tieback (TB)

Equipment

Description

Super-Fill Tieback (TB) equipment is used when

a production liner has been set, and a tieback
string is used up to the surface (Figure 4).
Typically, tieback strings are run with a PBR
stinger on bottom. The PBR stinger (with seals) is
stabbed into the PBR to provide a seal at the
connection of the two casing strings. Once it is
confirmed that the PBR stinger and receptacle fit
correctly, the tieback string with the PBR stinger
is withdrawn several feet from the receptacle so
cementing operations can be performed. Once
cement displacement is complete, the tieback
string is reinserted into the PBR.

Super-Fill TB equipment allows operators to

cement through the Super-Fill equipment ports

without withdrawing the tieback from the PBR
after insertion. These ports help reduce the risk
of the seals on the PBR stinger from being dam-
aged when it is reinserted into the PBR. The Figure 4—Super-Fill TB equipment

Super-Fill™ Diverter
Equipment

Description

The Super-Fill diverter equipment is designed for

use with a drillpipe when liners are being run
[Figure 6 and Figure 7 (Page 10-10)]. It allows a
fluid flow-path from the drillpipe ID into the
annulus above the liner. A drag-spring system on
the outer case of the tool causes the drillpipe
movement that opens and closes the Super-Fill
diverter equipment ports.

This equipment is used for liner applications

where small, annular clearances prevent mudflow
between the liner being run and the previous
casing string. Such conditions cause high mud
loss into formations in the openhole section of the
wellbore. Reliable automatic-fill equipment in-
stalled on the lower end of the liner can allow the
wellbore fluid to enter the liner freely, and the
Super-Fill diverter equipment can allow the fluid
to exit the drillpipe immediately above the liner.
This arrangement helps reduce the pressure drop
and the surge pressure on the formation while
the liner is being run, which helps reduce costly
mud loss into the formation. Figure 8
(Page 10-10) shows a Super-FillTM mud saver
system that includes the diverter. The use of the
om000125

Super-Fill diverter equipment can eliminate the

need to take returns at the surface.

Operation

Figures 8A and 8B show the assembly being run

into the hole. When the assembly reaches total
depth (Figure 8C), the diverter closes and the
bottom plug is displaced to the Super-Fill equip-
ment collar, which closes it. When displacement
is complete (Figure 8D), the assembly is pulled
out of the hole (Figure 8E).
